It does not appear on the VMware Hardware Compatibility list here

https://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=server&details=1&partner=51&keyword=%20P920&page=1&display_interval=10&sortColumn=Partner&sortOrder=Asc

So, there is no way of knowing if ESXi is compatible and will run.

ESXi installs on bare metal, so does not need an OS.

If this is for Production, I would recommend a server on the HCL!

Usually, one would run a server on a server platform.
for critical systems, one builds redundancy.

A workstation of that spec is good for CAD work,
...
IMHO, you need more memory that you could have in a workstation.

what will the VMs be doing?

ASKER

All the vms will be doing SQL trans-act
THe underlying resources are not suitable IMHO.
SQL is a high CPU consumer and a heave IO consumer.
Your setup depending on how big the DBs are will be impacted by lack of memory.
While you have 128GB of ram, the hit on the Drives ....
You need to ask you Dba, what IOPS are required for the database, size of databases, concurrent users, memory size, also what SQL licensing model you will be using.

Windows & SQL licenses if you do not have them.
