i have stupidly removed some old users from ad rather than deleting them via our exchange 2010 server.

i now find that i cannot delete the mailbox.

can anyone advise how i can delete a mailbox where the ad user has bern removed? do i need to do this via the exchange cmd shell or can i still do it via the exchange management shell?

any advice much appreciated.

If you delete AD user and the user is still showing in Exchange means there is a replication issue between Exchange and AD.
Please try this command frmo exchange server.
dcdiag /s:<dcname>

If you delete a user from AD automatically Exchange will mark the mailbox as soft-deleted mailbox.

ok thanks

does this mean it will be removed automatically?

i have only just removed them from ad, so it may take some time to show on the exchange management console - right?

does it indicate this soft delete, and how long should it take for it to actually remove it?

many thanks

yes. It will become a disabled mailbox.

It should not take more than 1min. If your server is healthy no delay it will disable immediately as Exchange is tightly integrated with AD.
