Are there any useful free tools or scripts (perhaps PowerShell), which can remotely get an inventory of all installed applications on a windows based machine/server to include exact version information? We need to do some inventory type work and was hoping there may be some useful tools we can make use of. Ideal output would be some form of HTML/ csv/xlsx type file with the results.

have a look at PDQInventory https://www.pdq.com/pdq-inventory/

The free version has some restrictions but I believe it will do the job.

According to COBIT 5 process BAI09 Manage Assets, the first step in IT asset management is the process of identifying and creating an inventory of IT assets. Beware IT asset management is a fundamental prerequisite to developing a meaningful security strategy.
