Why does the shortcut not work?

I had PaperPort 14 working normally, then it stopped and would not launch.   I uninstalled then reinstalled it, but it still will not launch, even from the location where it is installed.

Hi Doc,

There are many reasons why PaperPort 14.5 might not launch, although I doubt that it has anything to do with the shortcut. The most likely reason is the infamous BrowserSelected/Mozilla Firefox problem, documented in this EE article:
How to fix: PaperPort shows the splash screen then immediately closes - cannot run PaperPort

If the fix in there doesn't work for you, give me more details (if there are any) and we'll try some other ideas. Regards, Joe

I don't know paperport but I also tried to follow the Joe's articles and I didn't see a direct answer. A quick search and it may have to do with the OS.  http://nuance.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/18359/~/paperport-will-not-load-in-windows-10  Can you let Joe know which version of windows you are on? Have you made sure all windows updates are applied?

I don't understand that comment. That article has a direct answer to one reason why PaperPort 14.5 won't launch, namely, the BrowserSelected/Mozilla Firefox problem. Let me know if there's anything in that solution that isn't clear. There are, of course, other reasons, as discussed in these other two EE articles and one video:

Btw, the Nuance KB article that you posted (18359) is documented in detail in my first article in the list above, in case you'd like to learn more about the issue.

Also, Kofax (which has acquired the Document Imaging division of Nuance, including OmniPage, PaperPort, and Power PDF) has fixed the bulk of the "compatibility mode" problem in the recent release of PP14.7. It will now install natively on Windows 10 without the need to install Patch 1 prior to launch. The reason that PP14.5 without Patch 1 crashes on W10 is that W10 puts the application into compatibility mode. They updated the software so that will not happen anymore. However, if you manually enable any of the Windows compatibility modes, it will cause a crash. Thus, they documented this behavior and stated that it is not fixable in the current code base, i.e., this will be an item for the next Major release (but there is no ETA on that). Regards, Joe

Thanks, Joe.   To avoid any future problems, I installed the trial version of PP and will just pay for the version that works.   It automatically uninstalled the existing version and installed the latest.   So far, no problems.   I will let you know if a problem surfaces.   Thanks again.

You're welcome, Doc, and thanks to you for the update. I'm glad that the trial version of PP14.7 at the Kofax site works for you...my PP14.7 article is still on the to-do list. :)

Btw, you shouldn't have to pay for it if your PP14.5 is a retail version, as the PP14.5 serial number works on PP14.7, except for (1) PP14.5 that is bundled (OEM) with scanners and all-in-one devices and (2) PP14.5 Pro that is bundled with OmniPage Ultimate. Other than those two editions, your PP14.5 SN should be able to activate PP14.7. Regards, Joe
