WINUP failure KB4530684

Windows 10 Pro, consistent failures on Windows Update for KB4530684.  One of three systems, same basic config.  Only one consistently fails to complete.  Ran the WindowsUpdate Troubleshooter, and it finds no problems, LOL.  Alert in red stating it is a critical security update.

Any ideas?

Thanks a ton.

Thank you both.  The error is consistent - 0x80073701 - Device missing important security and quality updates, as I recall.   As memory serves, the Event log showed TONS of errors and warnings; something like Windows Hello will not be launched and some business related requirement.  SW Protection Service Hung, Computer lost lease to IP address on network card and a number of other problems yet to be confirmed.

I'm not there, but hope to return to it the latter part of this week.  I'll check out the link provided then.
are these upgraded pc's from win7 ?
if that is so - i suggest to backup and do a freh install
Hi,

maybe your Windows is broken at some point. Try the following:

Run the DISM Tool.  It will scan for corruption and attemps to repair any issues.

dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Run SFC to scan all protected system files, and replace corrupted files if found.

sfc /scannow

Then try and update again

Cheers

Was upgraded long ago and has complex, needed old science related apps used and no longer out there. compatibility mode if I recall correctly. System was recovered numerous times, worked fine for his needs.

More when I can check DISM and sfc later this week.

I’ve had someone send me a few things that may be helpful. The failures began quite a while back it was KB4524147 that for us had the 0X80073701 error message. Every other one since failed.
It looks like the problems began in July.
Checking SFC scan now found corruption that it was able to repair.
DISM efforts fail consistently and although the copies are not great here are a couple of samples that may be helpful.
The DISM log showed the same error messages from July on.

I plan to see that system and do more work this weekend

This sounds right on and aligns to what the voluminous log shows and the problems it results in right on spot. Thanks,  nobus et al.  I look forward to returning with good news this weekend.
i hope for good news, Asta

At elevated command prompt and stuck on ACCESS DENIED when trying this.

Checking the System 32 folder there are two existing folders one is called CatRoot dated 10/10/2019 the other catroot2 dated 12/11/2019.

Sorry about that, when I use the correct latest and renamed it catroot3 when then starting services again, they automatically restarted. Looks like this weekend will be another stint. Not looking good. The Windows Update troubleshooter never finds problems but also shows that the Troubleshooter history shows it was never run.  Drat, it’s a mess. Retrying to check Windows update after all the steps taken, in red same old ‘Your device is missing important security and quality fixes’.
ah - ok then still waiting..

found a Windows.old folder dating back to July when many of the errors started.  More when I return to it. sigh.
>>  Windows.old folder  <<  that comes from updating from win 7 to win 10 - it should have been deleted; so something went wrong then.
as things are, i suggest backup and fresh install - so not loose more time

thank you. As I said earlier I’ll be back to that computer sometime this weekend. It’s going to be tough convincing him about a clean install;  he doesn’t want to lose any of his applications that are so key to his scientific work. sigh.

listening further for any added insights.
you could try the "keep my files" option during install

PC was reset, created another account as Administrator and found errors on two drives Windows fixed. had to reinstall some apps. Disabled 3/4 floppy in Bios and reconfigured the ASUS BIOS settings that all helped. So far so good.  I’d like to close this and award nobus, the last link was very helpful. Thanks so much.

Checking system this AM, rather than showing correct TIME, of 6:06 AM, shows 7:06 PM.  Corrected the time zone, turned off all automatic, manually corrected date and time then turned on sync.  Last time sync'd in 2005.  Strange stuff.  If more problems pop up, will start new Q.  The Administrative Event Log is FILLED with problems still.

Thank you again for all the professionalism and courtesy shown here.  Miles of smiles these tough times. ":0)  Asta
i ftime gets astray - i suggest to loook at the bios battery - should be 3 V
Avatar of Asta Cu

Thanks again. After manually correcting the time zone and rebooting, the time remains correct BUT  since the event log has tons of errors still and sfc /scannow found and fixed corruptions posted to the Windows CBS log, will need to do more especially when windows couldn’t find the log ... nor Windows in search. Mess merits new questions.
