It's possible to co-edit Office files in all modern versions of SharePoint - online or on-premises (where Office Online Servers are installed).<br />

Excel is an outlier as it can only be co-edited in the browser, not in the desktop client.<br />

What version of SharePoint are you using? What sort of file is it?

Its Office 365. &nbsp;So SharePoint Online.<br />

So your saying that the modification can only take place online and the users need to make sure they are accessing the document via the browser and not the desktop app?

For Excel that is the case. If anyone edits using the Desktop app they lock the file.<br />
<br />
Users are then prompted to save a copy, and that might explain your duplicate files.
