Need instructions for nondestructive recovery Windows 10

sheana11 used Ask the Experts™
How do I do a non-destructive installation of Windows 10, where I don't lose my data such as programs or files? I heard that you have to be very careful as Windows has changed the meaning of options such as Refresh or whatever.

My computer came with home edition, no discs,  and I've always done any recovery protocols from within the computer.

Assuming you are able to boot into Windows now, the following should work:

1)  Download the Media Creation Tool (MCT) from https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10
2)  Run the MCT
3)  Tell it to download the ISO (not do the upgrade)
4)  Mount the ISO (right-click on it, left-click on Mount)
5)  Run Setup.exe
6)  Follow the prompts.  Make SURE to check the two boxes at the end about keeping everything

Thank you so much!
