make sure:

1. The server is accessible. Try and see if you can Ping to the server?
2. the database and credential provided are correct
3. make sure the credential got enough/necessary permissions for the setup.

you probably can use SQL Server Management Studio to test the connection with what you have entered in hMailServer Database Setup.

Yes, I can ping IP fine. Sa account is fine to access SQL server. What to adjust in configuration?

Yes, sa account is OK to create new schema.

Since you anonymized the server address, I'm assuming it's not localhost, and therefore you need to check if the MSSQL allows remote connections (TCP/UDP settings), and if the firewall is set up with this rule as well.

It's in the SQL Server Configuration Manager. Protocol TCP/IP needs to be enabled

Do you have ssms on the same system as the one you are running the install?

Your example suggests you are connecting to an ms SQL named instance.

Use ssms on the same system to test connectivity.

TCP/IP was enabled and relevant SQL server services had been re-started but issue persisted.

SSMS is fine to connect to the same.

Four filled the form for the database incorrectly.
Server info: instead of ip place the server\instance
The second one us asking for the Database name not database server name.

This is the reason for the error.

It is up to you, try hmailserver this is the DB that will be created, or as part of the instructions you should have created it ...
