vCenter backup fails

Hello, trying to take a simple vCenter backup to an HTTP location via the HFS tool but it's giving me the error below. Port 80 on the ESXi firewall is checked and the vCenter has no firewall. Anyone else run into this?

ESXi host firewall that vCenter is on is accepting 80 and 443.

I get a different error based on whether or not I use the root / or the folder path. The folder has everyone full control and the ficticious user account and permissions are set to root/password from HFS.

1. ERROR: Error at process ComponentScriptsBackup; rc:55.
2. ERROR: BackupManager encountered an exception: Hit exception inside process ComponentScriptsBackup
ERROR: stderr:Failed to dispatch component rbd backup

1. curl: (55) Send failure: Broken pipe
2. curl: (52) Empty reply from server.

ERROR: BackupManager encountered an exception: Failed to send data to the destination server. Please check network connectivity/space available/permissions on the server. For details please check the log file: /var/log/vmware/applmgmt/backup.log.

Hi,

did you check the mention log ? Is there more info or not?
/var/log/vmware/applmgmt/backup.log

Are you sure your http target is working, your target path is good, etc... ?

Did you try annother network protocol as FTP ?
but I am really not a fan of this integrated backup tool... and I am not alone
Is there a particular reason why you want to use it ?

Yes I'm trying to use it to backup vcenter quickly for restore in case of any upgrade, patch or certificate failure.

The details I gave are from the backup log.

Target path has to be good because HFS is too simple and I can browse to the path in my web browser with no issues.

I don't have an FTP server so I can't try FTP or SCP unless you have instructions on how to do one of those? I have the SCP tool and pscp on my desktop but not sure how to use it for this task.
Hi,

why not use a backup software ?
Else you could stop vCenter, clone it, before a major operation
But be carefull, reverting vCenter to an old state, from backup or snapshot or clone or else, has some caveats

there are free ftp servers existing, you should try a search, you will find it very quickly
Also, what are we speaking of ?
HFS ???
Firstly I thought you speak about the backup integrated feature in vCenter server appliance, seeing your screenshot
But now I doubt that, wondering why you call it HFS
Sorry if I misunderstood, also Q&A are still the same for the moment

We have 6.7 and to answer your questions, I am using vCenter integrated backup tool but you have to backup to an FTP or HTTP server hence the HFS tool on my desktop. I ended up installing FileZilla and using FTP instead but it installs into add/remove programs which is not approved. I answered my own question but I will look to see if people have better ways to download their backups i.e scp or http etc.
Oh you can backup to NFS in  6.7 I see? I'll research that but if anyone has done this before please share.
Ok, so I understood you correctly for the vCenter integrated backup option you use
But I don't know about your HFS tool

What is wrong about FTP and filezilla ?
it installs into add/remove programs which is not approved
I don't know what you mean.. of course you find that in add/remove program after installing it !
And I don't see where you answered your own question here.......

I already did it with FTP or FTPS and it went fine
But, again, I don't think this feature is used by a lot of people

Let see if there is other EE advice
Ah I see you can now use smb or nfs://x.x.x.x/NASvol1 in the latest 6.7. I'll go with that and close the ticket.

smbv2 won't work with vCenter 6.7 at the moment. I guess it's a bug.
