Windows 7 login prompt not showing

machine was shut down Friday and started to configure updates.

machine was started up this morning and seemed to be completing updates previously started. then, after some time, it was ready to be logged into. however  after ctl-alt-del
login boxes don’t show up.

after a while, it goes back and if you type
ctl-alt-del again, still no login prompt.

I looked on line and did see some suggest to simply turn it off 3 times, with no luck.

unfortunately, for some reason, system restore is not enabled.

I did try to safe mode and boot to last known good config, but that just seem to hang for a long time.

since this is windows 7 and we are looking to go to windows 10. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction to get this resolved .

thank you
