SQL database getting large

Dear Experts,

I have a SharePoint front end and a separate MS SQL 2014 server for the backend.  The database size has grown to 1.2TB and, although its working fine,  its making me uncomfortable being this size.

Is a single database of this size 'safe' to use?
What is the actual max limit for an SQL 2014 database?
Any tips on what I should be planning for? (can I split the database)

Many thanks

1.2 ΤΒ is a considerable size...have you query the Database to see which tables are large and why they are so large...
Surely the essential part is to establish a good backup plan.

Thanks.  Backup is fine and working well.  I know why they are large though - the document libraries are storing 100,000's of drawings, PDF docs and other files. The problem for me is how that can be split up so that SharePoint 2010 can continue to operate.
