Linux partion no longer accessible, but the windows 10 parition is, and I have data on the Linux Parition I want to retrieve with the windows 10 parition. How best can i do this?

I have a Linux install with a corrupted hard drive/partition.  One partition runs windows 10, and is healthy and booting while the other partition ha become corrupted and no longer boots.  I have data on the Linux Mint 18.3 partition that I want to extract.  How would I go about getting that data from the useable partition that runs windows 10.  does anyone know of a utility that I can purchase or download for free?  It would help immensely.

If the data is valuable, the first thing I'd do is backup the whole disk by making an image.  Run, say, dd or ddrescue from a live Linux DVD or USB.

Whether you can access it from Win10 will depend on the file system used for Linux, and the state of the partition.

Can you see the Linux partition from Win10?  I am guessing not, else you would not be posting?

After booting the machine using a live Linux DVD / USB, see if you can copy the data that way.

Alan.

a lot of times the systems I speaking about I do not have direct access to.  Meaning they are on the west Coast, and I am in the mid-atlantic region.  Many times I can only speak to the person, and have them send me screen shots, and other data.  This is whats happening in this case.  The user has a encrypted volume that he has corrupted.  Its a dual boot volume, and the Linux mint volume no longer boots.  He made changes, and what those changes were precisely I do not know.  He has data he wants, and I had told him to use the windows volume, and download a utility to access the Linux volume, and get that data.  This went well, and then he hit me with, well its encrypted, and I do not know the password any longer.  My guess is he encrypted it a install time.  I have told him to back up the data, and then possibly I will use your suggestions Alan to try and get him to get the volume healthy again.  I don't have a lot of hope that I can perform any magic to get the volume unencrypted.  Thoughts?

seems like booting into mint is the only way as it might know and remember the key.

If the key is not too long, you may also try brute force. But that will proove difficult without hands on the drive.

Msybe your client can send you a clone of the drive or partition... ?

I should speak system owner this evening some time.  He will reach out to me later.  I think that trying the recovery is the best possibility, and then attempting to login in normally as you are saying makes the most sense.  Without this possibility it may be a lost cause.  I should know which way I can proceed this eve, and will report back then.  If I had access to the system it would be much simpler, but as I have said I am just assisting verbally with ideas and concepts given the state of the system.  I can login to the Windows remotely, but then that doesn't give me the kind of access that I would like to have.  Ill update as soon as I speak with owner of the system.
