Dear Experts, I ran Full backup of Exchange 2016 server (Win2012R2) with Veeam 9.5 but got this error:

"Unable to truncate Microsoft Exchange transaction logs. Freeze jobs already stopped"

another error on Offline Office server is "RPC error" like this screenshot.

Can you please suggest? Many thanks in advance.

This is a common issue, and you'll find you should have perfect backups, BUT Veeam has not "purged" the logs.

If you run an incremental job, does it give you the same issue all the time ?

or just once...?

You can overcome this issue by disabling truncate logs, and you'll not get this error, but you'll then have logs to deal with, this maybe one for Veeam R&D to troubleshoot why the process is failing.

Hi Andrew, yes incremental backup is running. We will update the results after few hours.

also varying the time of the backup to a quiet low i/o time, and also making sure just one backup job is running across the storage platform can also help...

if it's an I/O related issue with the Storage System.

Bear in mind you can manually truncate the transaction log by flipping circular logging on and off again.

Hi, the incremental backup completed without any error. Logs also were truncated.

@andy: how can I do it manually on Exchange server? Or Veeam?

Circular logging is an Exchange thing, https://www.server-essentials.com/support/enable-or-disable-circular-logging-and-why-and-when-you-should-do-this . It's only a workaround for if the log gets too big though.

Works OK for me, just google for Exchange circular logging, it's under the database properties.

Just did some research, with circular logging, the incremental backup is unavailable, isn't it?

Yes but it clears the transaction log if it gets to a silly size, plus you flip it on and off so it's off again after you finish the workaround.

I would continue to use Veeam Backup, and make sure if clears your logs.

Circular login is not recommended option because you will only be able to restore from last full backup if exchange goes down.

Because circular login only keeps 5 logs files by default.

If your backups are failing to purge log files, then temporally enable circular login and purge log files.

Take a full exchange backup and then take incremental or differentials.

The incremental backup completed without any error, not sure about the solution but many thanks for your support and suggestions.
