Windows Update problems on SBS 2011

Hello, I'm administrator of a Windows Server SBS 2011 machine which has been having problems with Windows Updates for several months.

It won't download the updates, so neither server nor clients (which use the server as update source) are updated.

When I try to manually download, I get error 8024400E.

On event viewer I've got many ID 16 events with "WindowsUpdateClient" origin, stating "Could not establish connection. It is not possible to connect to the Automatic Updates service and therefore it is not possible to download and update the updates according to the set schedule. Other connection attempts will be established." (This may not be the actual English text, I translated from Italian).

I already had similar problems years ago, but the errors were different.

Under the registry folder I have two keys WUServer and WUStatusServer pointing to http://SBSNAME:8530, so I guess the server is unable to connect to itself?

either take those out so it can download from the internet or get WSUS offline updater and download and install everything using that.

But this wouldn't solve it I think, I'd like for the error to go away so all clients can update again.

From my understanding, your SBS server downloads from the internet and then your clients download from your SBS server.

As such, your SBS server doesn't need to connect to itself, it needs to connect to microsoft, make sure you back up the keys you change (Just those keys, not your entire registry) and reboot, you can always put them back later :-)

Time for a new server? SBS 2011, just like Win7, are now out of support.

I know, but it's not up to me. It will stay like this until July at least.

Did you remove the keys and reboot to try again or?

Yes, and after reboot the updates on the server started again.

Now I have to make certain they will propagate to clients too, but this is a big step.

Thanks.

You're welcome and you can force propagation using Group Policy and point the clients at the server, make sure the server isn't in the same OU as your client machines.

Thanks
