IIS 10 returning service unavailable for a well-established web site

Hi,

I have a static public website I've hosted for years and it is running under IIS 10.  Late this afternoon it started returning a "HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable."

Restarted it, no change. Deleted/redefined the site in IIS, same thing.   Tried enabling failed request tracing and nothing is showing up.

If I define an 'example.com' entry and point to it via the hosts file, it comes up fine.

Never seen this before.  Any ideas?

That sounds like a DNS problem.  Check to see if your hostname is still valid by looking it up thru WHOIS.  Or post the name here and we can look it up.

DNS is fine; I manage the dns server, and in this instance I overrode the dns server with an entry in my hosts file to make sure.
To temporarily fix the issue I copied their content over to one of my other servers and updated dns to point to that one and that is working, but the issue still needs to be fixed.  That isn't the server they should be on.

Ok this is even weirder.  I just updated my host file to point to the problem server for that domain...and it is working fine now.  I hate this.  Problems that go away by themselves...come back by themselves.

And they did.  The original production copy now returns 'Service Unavailable'.

Hi,

Found the root cause of the issue I was having with the website.  The Application Pool entry for this site was stopped.  I don't know why it stopped though, so that puzzles me.  If I recall, don't they stop/start based on traffic?
