PC with no noice, with 3-4 monitors connected, running RDP as main working PC ??? Is it possible?

I have a situation where I want to create a working place for one single person. It should be a normal desk with 3 to 4 monitors and the room should be silent, so no PC with fans should be there. 10 meters away is another room where we can put a PC, another option would be to run RDP from the desk to a RDP-server in the other room.

A PC with 10 meters long cables are problematic for the monitors, but even more for USB devices. There are active cables of different kinds, but I have not find any which works 100 %.

The other idea with for example a Raspberry PI at the desk, running RDP to a server, would be great but I have only found them with two monitor connectors.
And I am also a bit confused how RDP will work with several monitors?

What is your best ideas?

What are the requirements and the budget?

There are a lot of passively cooled PC systems... but needing 4 monitors means a GPU like Matrox which is around 700€.

What is your use-case?

Cause you may also consider using 1 or 2 NUCs (using daisy chaining).

Or you could get 2 cheaper GPU's like the Nvidia 1050ti and put in two. That'll display 4 monitors. Or should anyway.


What's the actual requirement here, it's quite an odd request.

You need a KVM extender.  The options are pretty much limitless.  Google around enough and you'll find one that suits your needs.

Setting up a computer with 4 monitors is easy enough.  I use a single $200 video card in my desktop at home and a USB Docking Station to add a 5th.  At my office I have 4 screens with a pair of graphics cards that are now quite old (they were hand-me-downs 5 years ago from a friend - today you could probably find them on Ebay for $20-40 each.  If that).  And at a client I use a 3 monitor capable card with a USB docking station that adds a 4th.

So a 4 monitor workstation won't require anything to fancy or expensive.

If you want to RDP into that system, then, obviously, you'd need an RDP client that supports 4 monitors in some way.  The quick and dirty solution would be a thin client with a a USB docking station that supports dual screens.  Estimated TOTAL cost without the actual screens - $500 new.  Or more, depending on the caliber of thin client you get.  Strictly speaking, the DESKTOP doesn't need 4 screens if you're RDPing in - ONLY the machine your connecting from.  Though to support multiple screens on the RDP connection properly, you need the enterprise version of Windows (IIRC).  Then you connect with the option check to "use all my monitors for the remote session" (If you don't use the Enterprise version, I believe you can use a "span" option but that would simulate ONE monitor split into 4 and that could be problematic with screens that weren't exactly the same).

And of course, instead of using 4 monitors, you could just use ONE 4K TV as a monitor... it has the equivalent of 4 Full HD screens in a 2x2 formation.
you said " and the room should be silent, so no PC with fans should be there. "   are you aware that modern systsems have 12 cm fans, rotating at such low speeds - that theay are barely noticeable?  or do you really want NO FAN?

Thanks for all your comments so far.

With silent I mean that I want a working place with no disturbing noices. That is for pure personal reasons, you spend so many hours in front of the pc and I hate the fan sound. I know you forget about it after a while, but if you turn them off you realize how relaxing it is to get rid of the background noice.

Today, with a PC in the other room and 10 meter long active cables for monitors and USB devices, and I have some loss in quality in the monitors, but more importantly a lot of strange problems with my USB-devices (keybord, mouse, scanner, memory sticks, kameras e.t.c)

I do not want a RDP solution, just though of it as one way to deal with this.

I need several monitors since I work a lot connected to my customers, often with remote sessions by RDP. And the standard RDP client is very bad in other modes than full screen, so a single 4K big monitor does not help you there, better with 3-4 monitors there you can put your own email client in one of them, some messenger and stuff, two or three rdp sessions with remote servers as well.
There are no gaming at all, and not much other entertainment going on either.

From your answers I can see three different approaches:

1. Normal PC with silent cooling system. Maybe a standard pc today with big chassi fan would be good enough, maybe not. The need for several monitors will make it necessary with a real graphic card which often means a small and loud fan on it?

2. KVM extender. MIght be a good solution if it good enugh to handle expecially USB devices correctly (as if they had been put directly into the PC).

3. Thin client (or Raspberry PI) running RDP.

Many options. What's best?   ;-)
i would select  #1
just test a modern pc  to check - probably you find a friend or relative with one - no?
i would say - any pc jounger than 4 years
right now - i'm sitting at my pc - and if idon't put my ears at 20 cm of the pc - i cannot hear the fans
