VPN disconnecting

I have used a Windows 10 VPN connection for years and now it's dropping the connection after a short while. The VPN server reports that the disconnecting was by user. The VPN client reports (RasClient in event viewer) reports reason code returned on termination is 829. That error code refers to a failure of the connection but that can't be the problem, I don't think. There are 2 computers of the same type (Surface Pro) both accessing the same VPN server from the same location. One works without difficulty, the other drops the connection. Settings are the same for both client computers except one accesses the internet wirelessly via a router and the other one, the problematic one, is wired to the same router. The only difference I see in the event logs is that on the problematic client the link to the RAS server is established by "user System" and on the one that works the link is established by the actual user name. I have tried everything I can find on the internet.

Much depends on the server deals with allocating IPs.

Checking what the error is on the server side.

Thanks for the comment. I'm not sure what you're saying/asking. When the connection is up the PPP adapter on the client reports an IP in the 10.0.0.# range and the DNS server as 10.0.0.16, which is the IP of the VPN server on the network. Our router on the server end has a public/static IP and VPN traffic is forwarded on the router to the 10.0.0.16 address on the server through the appropriate ports.
Double check the settings on each device the error, 829, deals with a mismatch that the link does not setup.

Usually, a VPN would such as this ..

Two devices on the same LAN, connecting to the same destination with one succeeding, one failing shoukd be confirmed that the connection settings are identical. Then only connect with one.

Are you using different or the same username for the VPN connection?
Do you configure the server to issue ip based on username?
The two computers use different user names for the vpn connection. I really don't know the answer to the second question. Where do I look to see?

As far as I can tell the VPN settings on the two clients are identical, though I've tried so many on the problematic client that I'm not sure anymore.
Go through the VPN connection properties check all options.

Did you setup both clients?
Yes, I set up both clients. Do you know how I can see the settings for the vpn connections? On the problem client I can see all the vpn connections I've created in powershell but on the computer that works I can't. Go figure.
I've looked at the server to address your question about assignment of IP addresses. The DHCP server shows the IP address assigned to the client PPP adapters (on both client computers) as leased to sandk01A.sandkdoma.local. That is not the name of the client computer or the RAS user, it's the name of the server computer and the domain.
What about the comparison of settings on the client?
Does the client always experience connection failures, or only when the other is connected as well?

One option, create a new VPN connection making sure to choose correct parameters as far as auth method, VPN type auto, PPTP, etc.
The computer that works used to be mine, now it's my wife's. My profile and hers are on the computer. The VPN connection was created by me when it was my computer. Now my wife is using the same connection. Error logs described it as a "all-user connection." The VPN connection on my computer that has until recently worked quite well is not a "all-user connection." I don't know if this makes any difference but it's the only difference I can see between the two setups. I was 2 -3 years ago when I created the connection on what was then my computer. I don't know how it became a "all-user" connection.

I have very carefully created new vpn connections on my computer. Same problem. I  configured RAS on the server to support L2TP. Same problem. I have tried changing the alluserconnection parameter to $True in powershell. Error, entry not found in phone book. Any ideas on how to modify existing or create new connection that is "all-user."

We both work from home and vpn to the office. We expect to be connected continuously through the day. My wife's stays connected. Mine drops repeatedly, sometimes staying connected for an hour or so. Btw, have also set idle disconnect to 24 hours in powershell.

Thanks
