Open an image with GUI UBUNTU

Hi,

A friend has created an image and I am using VMWare player 15 to open it.  The system image is on UBUNTU. I am trying to login to it using the GUI interface and what I got after login is a field like this root@chwoodman01:~#  (see screenshot attached)

There is a command-line I can type to see the Graphic User Interface?

Can you please advise?

Did your friend install the GUI ?

or did he install just server ?

There are a few commands you may need to INSTALL the missing components. But this will require internet access.

see here

As Andrew suggested, what you have is either a server install (no GUI) or the GUI system has been removed.

To determine if any trace of X11 (GUI) is installed, issue this command. If no output emits, then you have a server install (no GUI).

dpkg -l | grep xserver-xorg

Hi,

for a more current desktop you can also install MATE:

# sudo apt install tasksel
# sudo tasksel install ubuntu-mate-core
# sudo service lightdm start

Hi All,

I spoke to my friend that created the image from their server which I can spin the image using VMWare player 15 and then I can log in to it. He had mentioned that because I am using Windows 10 I should add the IP address to my "host file (in note pad - located in c:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts)" and then open the browser and type the IP address in the URL, then I will be able to see the data in the browser.

The issue is when I spin the image using VMWare player I can log in to it and when I type "ifconfig command" the screens get black and I can only see the cursor flashing.

What I need to find out is the IP from that Image. Do you know any other command that I could type in to see the IP Address used with this image?

Can you please advice?

Kind regards,
Eduardo

What has any of this got to do with I have NOT got a GUI ?

This is a new question, so please post a new question with the above information in Networking, VMware, so experts can advise how you setup your VMware Player networking.

Hi,

I agree with Andrew about this a new question for Networking, VMware.
