For working with SQL in R or Python you should look at the packages sqldf (in R) and pandasql (in python) which makes working with data frames in R/Python easy with SQL.

Also a good application for Programming is the Anaconda framework with Jupyter and RStudio included among other usefull programs.
Note that Jupyter can run both python and R if you create a virtual environment that include both python and R libraries.
That can become usefull to use best of both worlds when working with your data.
