Bios update - is it really all that necessary

I have a Dell xps 8930. Update app has been bugging me about updating the Bios. I've done this before, several times, and several times it has left my W10 with corrupt system files. No problem, of course, with scannow. But I also read on one site that you should not update your bios unless you have a problem with the machine that no other measure can solve. The truth about bios updates, please? Thanks.

Andy's correct Dell are pushing this as 'Urgent' because it fixes a collection of vulnerabilities in the Intel hardware.  These include Spectre/Meltdown.  Theoretically your machine is vulnerable at a machine code level to these exploits (and some of the shortcuts that created these vulnerabilities actually allow faster performance so you could see a small hit on performance in exchange for your better security!) Whether you apply them or not is your call.  I guess it's possible in the future Microsoft may engineer Windows not to run on vulnerable platforms. They have precedent for this.

Hi  normanml ,

BIOS updates will not make your computer faster, they generally won’t add new features you need, and they may even cause additional problems. You should only update your BIOS if the new version contains an improvement you need.

Thanks to everyone. I haven't put a backup disk imaging program on the machine yet, so, for now, I'm staying pat. If I'm reading carefully between everyone's lines, the consensus seems to be "If it ain't broke don't fix it. Re: imaging programs, anyone using Macrium? I have SP but find it to involved, too many features.
