Power BI SQL On-Premise connector issues

I installed the on-site connector and successfully added it to Power Apps and Power Automate, working fine.  However, when I try and get data from SQL in Power BI, there does not seem to be a similar connector available.  I tried using just the SQL connector, specifying the Windows server name as the SQL server and the Table name I want and using the Windows user credentials, but it kept failing.

I found a thread that suggested the workaround was to run Power BI desktop as administrator, and when I tried that the response went to a time out message.

Really appreciate it if you can help.

Did you tried to follow the steps from Microsoft documentation as described here https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-gateway-sql-tutorial to "Refresh data from an on-premises SQL Server database"? Essentially you can follow those steps to get your Power BI going. Please see in particular "Connect a dataset to a SQL Server database" paragraph to make sure you have installed all pieces needed like the data gateway.

I have come to believe my issue is a SQL permissions or settings one and have started a new thread.
