Shortcut to close messages in Thunderbird

I'm used to using Outlook for email and in Outlook you can close an email message with the escape key.  This is very convenient and speeds up processing email greatly.

Is there any shortcut key combo where I can do the same in Thunderbird?

I mean that I want to close an email I've opened by clicking on it so that it's opened in a new tab.  In Outlook it opens as a new window.

Alternatively, if there's a way to get the email to open in a new window and if Thunderbird then allows a user to close that window with the escape key that's even better.  That's the way Outlook works and I'm used to it.

Only thing I'd say is that under Tools the submenu is named Options, not preferences.
Interesting,

Another difference is "mine" is located under Edit instead of Tools.
I just know that it's location is different under Windows. Never noticed the wording difference.

The wording difference may be a due to version and/or operating system it's installed on

I'm running 68.5.0 (64-bit) under Linux
I'm using TB 68.5.0 and what I had to use is
