Deleted Snapshots
If I have one or many snapshots of a VM, then I delete them all, will this keep the first snapshot on the Datastore and rename it "Consolidate Helper" ?
When does this "Consolidate Helper" file comes into the game ?
Thank you

if you CLICK DELETE ALL - All snapshots will be deleted and merged to the parent.

what about "Consolidate Helper" file
When does this get created ?

Can you provide me a context of where you've read this ?

Hello There
that 's what I have read too..
is this "consolidated helper" came up just in the newer versions of Vsphere ?
Not sure when the Datastore is low in space why you cannot deleted the snapshots as described on the first link you posted.. It is Deletion not Addition of another snapshot... ?

Consoliation was a new useless feature VMware invented to help out newbies!

why Vmware says that when the Datastore is low in space you cannot delete the snapshots
no space for the merge operation.
ASKER
but the base Disk of the VM as well as the snapshots of the VM are all in the same storage
example:
You have Datastore 100 GB
Base Disk(Flat.Vmdk) 70 GB
Snapshot1 : 5 GB
Snapshot2 : 6GB
Snapshot3: 8GB
Snapshot4: 1 GB
SO when you merge the snapshots with base disk you will get 90 GB
So : 70+5+6+8+1= 90 GB
still less than 100 GB
You cannot have snapshots + Base disk greater than the datastore size if hey are all on the same datastore
*** Probably they meant , if you have base disk in a Datastore1 100 GB , and you have other snapshots in other datastores.. and for instance if you add all snapshots size from other datastores to the base disk size of the VM , and you will end up with a size greater than the datastore size (>100GB) where the base disk of the VM resides...
*** Regardless of that, Vmware should give a warning, and recommendation to move VM base disk to a larger Datastore where you can consolidate all snapshots without worrying about the space.

The Parent Disk is always 70GB it cannot grow more than the defined size.
It cannot grow to 90GB.
It's called Administration, and Admins should do it, there are also alerts that can be defined, and Admins should always leave 20% of datastore space.
It cannot grow to 90GB.

so when you merge snapshots to the base disk which is 70 GB..what will happen ?... it should grow.. right ?
