SQL 2017 Always ON and Failover Clustering

Hi,

Enviroment:  SQL Server 2017 Always ON 2 nodes with DAG DDBB.
Each server only 1 network interface.
DAG synchronous replica and manual fail over
No clustering enabled at windows OS

Right now, 1 listener defined but, as I could read, for  listener adding properly,  windows failover clustering is needed and also auto-failover needed

Is this correct?

Regards

My understanding is that you would need a Windows Failover Cluster in order to create a listener, as that is a cluster resource, but it doesn't have to be automatic failover.

Hi,

As I understand... then Fail Over Clustering is needed  correct?

SQl 2017 HA Always On does not have  auto failover!! :(
Availability groups without a Windows cluster is called scale out read replicas, and is not considered a HA/DR solution.

You have to have a cluster to build a listener, and you have to have a cluster to support auto failover. BUT you can build a listener but choose to leave the groups in manual failover. The trade off here is between performance and safety.

HI,

Windows clustering installed but I can not create auto fail over DAG at SQL Server.

Any idea?

Have you created a cluster? What are you trying? What's failing? Are you seeing any error messages?
