alternative to telnet

I'm looking for an alternative to using telnet to test the ability to reach a server on a specific port.

typically, I'll start with confirming if I can reach a server with a ping and then do a telnet as:

telnet server-name port#

Is there something better that's about as straightforward (perhaps more verbose with messages)?

BTW, I'm testing from Windows to Windows.

Also nmap can be useful.
If you want to test for being prone to vulnerabilities look at tools like metasploit.
