Connect remotely to unresponsive PC #2

Hi Experts,

I am looking for a way to connect to my unresponsive PC remotely, see following.

Already tried shutdown /r /m \\PCName /t 20 but did not seem to help.

Thanks

Hello There

Can you tell us more background info?

Is it the same issue you got last time?

Is it possible to tell someone to reboot the machine in the remote location?
if the pc is set to restart on power fail, can you possibly cut and restore the power?

Hi Experts,

At that time I had someone trying to get hold on that PC for over two hours w/o avail.
Very interestingly that after we stopped trying, not much after I was able to gain Access to that PC...

@Hello

These should tell you some recent experience we had with this PC...

@nobus,

As its very likely this may happen again in neirest future...is it possible you describe in details how to apply the above as well as cut and restore the power remotely?

Thanks,
Ben
i id not suggest to cut and power on remotely, i asked if it was possible to cut and restore the power
the setting for startup after power loss is in the bios, and varies with each mobo
So is there any issue now?

You can force the computer to auto-start after the power is back. To do that, get into the BIOS and find something like Restore on AC/Power Loss, AC Power Recovery or After Power Loss.

Hi Experts,

At the moment I am not facing this connectivity problem, however since this PC was diagnosed as slowly dying, I am just waiting to get a new one.

Since this problem of not being able to connect thru my regular channels (gotomypc or connectwise although being able to ping it and view folders thru other pc's on the network) keeps on happening, I am wondering what can be done to either prevent it from happening or setup a back door that would allow me in in such a case...

I'm mostly working remotely with no one at the place to manually shut down or restart it.

BTW, I also realized something strange happening occasionally on this pc not sure if its related, the download folder shows wrong date at grouping although pc has it right, see attached.

 Thanks,
 BenUntitled.png
From what I know up to now about that machine the connectivity failure is directly related to having no free disk space avaialble. So the straight workaround is to make sure to have that free space, without looking for the cause. E.g. by running a daily task deleting the files discussed in the other thread.

That is probably the fastest way with least effort, and ok since that machine is going to be replaced anyway.

Hi Qlemo,

"From what I know up to now about that machine the connectivity failure is directly related to having no free disk space avaialble "

Right, this is how it all started, however that got fixed and since then none of the problems followed where due to disk space, see attached. Untitled.png

Thanks,
Ben
i don't know all that happened to that pc, so my only suggestion is to reinstall a fresh OS

Hi Experts,

This is just happening again...
Can someone please guide me how to gain access to that PC?

"so my only suggestion is to reinstall a fresh OS"

As mentioned I'm awaiting either new hard drive or entire new PC to be approved shortly, just need fill the car with gasoline till I reach the destination...

Thanks,
Ben

Exact the same what happened last Sunday repeated itself.
A whole day it was freezing and at night it suddenly woke up and this is what popped up.
Files that help describe the problem:
  C:\Users\bfuchs\AppData\Local\Temp\WER3172.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xml
  C:\Users\bfuchs\AppData\Local\Temp\WER36A1.tmp.appcompat.txt
  C:\Users\bfuchs\AppData\Local\Temp\WER37EA.tmp.mdmp

Read our privacy statement online:

If the online privacy statement is not available, please read our privacy statement offline:

Any idea?

Thanks,
Ben
it looks like a hardware problem - and it can be anything, from an empty bios battery over bad ram, bad disk  or anything else
i fear you need someone at that location; to investigate

Hi,

As mentioned either here or in previous thread, we had already someone investigating and coming to the conclusion that there is a hard drive issue and its in process of getting replaced.

My questions in this thread basically are
1- If there is a way to prevent this freezing from happening, especially knowing that its occurring on weekends.
2- When its already at freezing state, is there anything we can do remotely to regain access.

Thanks,
Ben
The question is what is freezing. The network connection or the HDD itself?

If the network connection, then yes, you can do something about it. You can use Task Scheduler to restart the network connection periodically.

If the HDD, you need to wait until it unfreezes (if ever), or you need to reboot. You can possibly prevent it if you know what triggers this behavior.
when you have access, look in event viewer for errors, or in windows\minidumps for dmp files -  post the latest here

Hi Experts,

Sorry for late response as I had no access to this pc for some time.

"when you have access, look in event viewer for errors "

That PC at the moment froze again, however I have access to the event viewer of that pc remotely, is there a way I can export error report in order to post here?

Thanks,
Ben
Open EventViewer -> right-click on the Administrative Events -> find the Export option
Avatar of bfuchs

ASKER

Dont see option to export, see attached.

Thanks,
BenCapture.PNG
EventViewer -> Custom Views -> click on Administrative Events -> then it should be available

This is what I got under Administrative Events >> export custom view.

Dont see any which recent date modified, which one should I select?

Hi,

Attached.

g2tray_01.dmp

Thanks,

g2tray is a file that is used by GotomyPC, but the dmp file has no more info
you may try another software or method

So lets go with the event viewer option, can you give me exact steps how to export the report needed (win7)?

Thanks,
Ben
How to export event viewer logs?    https://www.manageengine.com/products/active-directory-audit/kb/how-to/how-to-export-event-viewer-logs.html
Open Event Viewer (Run → eventvwr. msc).
Locate the log to be exported.
Select the logs that you want to export, right-click on them and select "Save All Events As".
Enter a file name that includes the log type and the server it was exported from.
Save as a CSV (Comma Separated Value) file.

Which one is needed for troubleshooting this?

Hi Experts,

So back to my original questions.

While the PC is at freezing stage (as its currently the case), there is no way to wake it up, although its files and services are accessible thru the network, see attached?
Untitled.png

Any suggestion how can I avoid this at the future?

Thanks,
Ben
That really looks like resource exhaustion, and services will get unavailable one by one over time. The only way to keep the machine running without knowing the real culprit is to reboot it each couple of days, e.g.  twice a week.

ASKER

Hi,

Whenever I log back into it I see something has crashed, see for example below.
Perhaps I should simply keep all programs closed all the time and just open one at a time and only for the time needed?

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
    <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Hi Experts,

That's always a good idea if your visits are only occasional. Applications might excessively consume memory after hitting "fatal" errors - I've indeed seen that happen in the past.
I am testing this suggestion for the next few days, if this will avoid the crashing will accept this as the answer.

Thanks,
Ben

we are being closed these days so its time I should close this thread as well...
Will open a new one if this occurs again and post a list here.
