There was a tool called Google Drive plug-in for Microsoft Office. Not sure if it still exists.

Now it might be possible with G-Suit and Drive File Stream.

HI Patricia,

Is the Google account you're using part of G Suite? You can ask your admin if Drive File Stream can be installed so you can have certain folders backed up to your Google Drive.

When you are in your google drive, you can click on the gear and then click the link for "Get Drive for Desktop"
If your org is eligible for Drive File Stream you'll be taken to that help page, if you are only eligible for Google Drive Backup and Sync you will be taken to the Google Drive download page where you can click Download on the Personal side.

If you need to use Backup and Sync, you can set a specific Google Drive folder to be sync'd on your computer, and you can edit the Excel documents there and when you save them they will be uploaded to Google Drive.

You wanted to do it directly from the MS Word/Excel. Since this is not possible for you, you can install Backup & Sync app from Google. Then log in with your Google account.

After you install the app, the folder "C:\Users\username\Google Drive" will be created. This folder on the computer is synchronized to Google Drive. It also keeps the folder structure. So simply save the file here and it will sync to Google Drive. You can also edit files from this folder. This is a good workaround.
