Client Settings for Software Updates Examples.
Client Settings for Software Updates Examples.
in Client Settings / Software Updates there are some settings , indicated below, which are not clear without examples , I need SCCM Expert to put out some clear examples.
--When any software update deployment deadline is reached, install all other software update deployments with deadline coming within a specified period of time
--Period of time for which all pending deployments with deadline in this time will also be installed
--Enable installation of software updates in "All deployments" maintenance window when "Software Update" maintenance window is available
Microsoft explanation here without examples, is still not clear:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/configmgr/core/clients/deploy/about-client-settings
Thank you

Enable installation of software updates in "All deployments" maintenance window
it is clear...when you select "All deployments" in maintenance window , software Updates as well task sequences are included in the maintenance window.
but they added this sentence that added more confusion: when "Software Update" maintenance window is available

This one sounds clear now.
Microsoft example on this link: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/configmgr/core/clients/deploy/about-client-settings
For example, you configure the following maintenance windows:
All deployment: 02:00 - 04:00
Software updates: 04:00 - 06:00
By default, the client only installs software updates during the second maintenance window. It ignores the maintenance window for all deployments in this scenario. When you change this setting to Yes, the client installs software updates between 02:00 - 06:00.
It makes sense...
Though SCCM Administrator needs to be careful when he selects All Deployments because Software Updates are included...and if he does not mean it then he might get a computer rebooted during this time 02:00 - 04:00...(if reboot required by an update), and probably he does not want that computer to Reboot at that time.

Software update deployment 1 with deadline of 8PM
Software update deployment 2 with deadline of 11PM
MW of 8PM to 5AM
You can have one software Update with install deadline : 8PM and another one with deadline : 11 pm and have maintenance window 8pm -5 am.
There is no need for that Client Settings ... Not sure why Microsoft came up with that in Client Settings.
SCCM is confusing. I just started at this company 6 months ago and started the journey of patching their servers with SCCM in January. There are a lot of annoying things you will find along the way. By default, restart notifications are 12 hours. If your maintenance window is is shorter than this, SCCM will refuse to restart the servers, even if NO one is logged into the server. What logic is that? I had to go in and force restart a bunch of servers and then track down the restart notification in client settings and set it to 15 minutes. Now it restarts them without any issues.

Mmmm something new to learn...I thought Notification is just for information... it does not enforce nor prevent Restart of the computer when required by Software Update..... Restart of the computer when required by Software Update should happen during the maintenance window, regardless of the client settings notifications settings.

Enable installation of software updates in "All deployments" maintenance window when "Software Update" maintenance window is available
On your maintenance window, you can change the type of deployments that are allowed. If you say All Deployments, any deployment will kick off during the maintenance window. If you just pick Software Updates, only software update deployments will apply during the MW.
