asked on

How can I use Samsung Data Migration software to clone a 500GB drive to a 1TB Samsung Solid State Drive?

Hello and Good Evening Everyone,

As an extension to some currently open post, I wish to ask the following question:  How can I use Samsung Data Migration software to clone a 500GB drive to a 1TB Samsung Solid State Drive?  I have an extra internal hard drive bay with a SATA connector on this Acer Aspire V3- 731-4473 laptop which I want to use for interfacing the blank 1TB Samsung Solid State Drive.  Once the cloning process is complete, I wish to swap out the drives and boot up from the newly cloned 1TB Samsung Solid State Drive.  I assume the Samsung Data Migration software will create a bootable USB flash drive with self-explanatory options to make all of this possible, but, I am not sure it will be that simple.

In closing, I believe the answer to this question will help provide closure not only to this question but, to some currently open post as well.  So far, this has turned out to be a huge learning experience for me.

Thanks in advance for any feedback given here.  I look forward to reviewing everyone's suggestions.

not needed.. the new disk will boot just the same as the old disk.. you might want to expand the disk if it doesn't do it by itself in disk management.

The source drive 500GB is not made by Samsung and it does boot just fine using Windows 10.  The target or blank drive is the Samsung 1TB.  With respect to the Magician Data Migration Tool, could you provide a direct download link for this, Arnold, so I can go ahead and get this project underway?  The Acronis True Image software was going to come with the USB to SATA connector which was determined to not be needed seeing that I have an extra or available hard drive bay with a SATA interface.

If there is further clarification needed, please feel free to let me know and I will get back with everyone.  I believe we are all on the same page though with regards to the logistics of what I am needing to do.

Thanks again :-)

Arnold,

To be perfectly honest, I am uncertain of the manufacture of the source 500GB hard drive.  However, I can find this out for you tonight and post back my findings.  My focus has been mostly on the 1TB Samsung drive which will be used as the target or blank drive.  Seeing that the blank 1TB drive is a Samsung, I believe the link you provided should do the trick.  Do you agree?

           Thanks

Andy posted the link to download from sa.sung.

Open device manager, expand hard drives
On disk management getting properties of a drive, you can through the contriller/advanced tab see the drive info.

Acer potentially has a hitachi/IBM drive
I've only used the Samsung software using a Samsung drive as a destination and it worked after I installed it on the source computer.

i've tested the samsung software
i had following setup :
OS = C:
120 GB Kingston SSD = E:
500 Gb Samsung ssd = F:
starting the migrations software it showed :
C: as source, and F: as Target; it gave no option to swap the target drive, or the source, so it does not see all drives

**all drives could be seen and used in explorer, and disk manager

yes - but it does NOT see the fsecond SSD
i find an imaging  software that does not see otrher brand s not worth my money; i prefer one that Always works
It ONLY sees your system drive AND any SAMSUNG drives and nothing else. The program was made for the lowest common denominator of a user only having 1 drive and buying the Samsung drive to replace the existing drive i.e.. HDD to SSD

ok - but that shows it's limitations - that's why i would not recommend it

Hello and Good Evening Everyone,

I am very pleased to say this issue has finally been resolved despite numerous failed attempts using different options.  To make a long story short, I basically connected a SATA to USB 3.0 adapter to the USB port of my laptop and connected the SATA connector to the 1 TB Samsung Solid State Drive.  Then, I opened the Samsung Data Migration software which automatically and correctly identified the Souce and Target Drives.  I simply clicked Start to begin the cloning and the software successfully carried it out while Windows 10 was still open.  The cloning itself took about 4 hours, but, it was worth the wait.  Once complete, I shut down the laptop, removed the original drive, and installed the larger 1 TB Samsung Solid State Drive.  The laptop booted up much faster with all of my Windows 10 desktop applications, utilities, games, and so forth.  The system even shuts down much faster now.

Thanks again, everyone, for your help.  I hope everyone accepts my apology for taking so long to close this post, but, things were not working out as expected when I first undertook this project.  But, it is done now and behind me.

Andy,

Samsung's Data Migration successfully worked out.  Thanks for your valued input and your patience throughout this project.

Have a good evening and be safe :-)

Software

Software is any set of instructions that directs a computer to perform specific tasks or operations. Computer software consists of programs, libraries and related non-executable data (such as documentation). Computer software is non-tangible, contrasted with computer hardware, which is the physical component of computers. Software written in a machine language is known as "machine code". However, in practice, software is usually written in high-level programming languages than machine language. High-level languages are translated into machine language using a compiler or interpreter or a combination of the two.
