asked on

raise forest level to 2019

Hi Experts,

I have some questions regarding DC upgrades.

The forrest and domain Level is 2008R2.

I have to install many WIN2019 DCs.

What is the minimum level I need ?
How to raise the level in steps ?
Which exchange version is supported ?

1) If you are 2008 R2 forest level you are good to go
2) Once you have 2019 DC's only - having removed the 2008 R2 DC's, you can choose the forest functional level to move up to
3) You are currently supported up to Exchange 2016. Once you go to 2019, you have to have a forest functional level of at least 2012.

The thing that clients most often miss when moving from 2008 R2 to 2016/2019 is that NT FRS needs to be replaced with DFS for sysvol.

For Windows Server 2019, there are no new forest or domain functional levels added in this release = no DFL or FFL 2019 exists. It also means that the highest Domain Functional Level available is Windows Server 2016

The minimum requirement to add a Windows Server 2019 Domain Controller is a Windows Server 2008 functional level. The domain also has to use DFS-R as the engine to replicate SYSVOL.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/identity/ad-ds/active-directory-functional-levels

How to raise DFL or FFL:
For Domain: Active Directory Users and Computers -> Right-click on your domain -> Raise Domain Functional Level
For Forest: Active Directory Sites and Trusts -> Right-click on Active Directory Domains and Trusts -> Raise Forest Functional Level

Hello, correct me if I am wrong.

When I have DCs with WIN2012 and WIN2012R2, the highest domain and forest level will be WIN2012 , right ?

Correct. In this case, you can have domain functional level Windows Server 2012 or lower.
Ok.

When all DCs are changed to WIN2019, then I can change domain level 2016 and forest level 2016, right ?
ok great.
Now I tried to promote a new win2019 server to a DC but this failed.
The old FRS is still enabled.

What can I do ?

Great and quick help
The old FRS is still enabled.
You need to install the DFS Replication role.
Server Manager -> Manage -> Add Roles and Features -> select the DFS Replication role.

Then run the commands above.
I am glad you got it working.
