Questions around Citrix Licensing Portal - Trying to reallocate existing in production used Licenses

Hello.  I am moving my license server from Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2016.  I want to have my existing XenApp 6.5 and my new XenApp 7.15 co-exist with these licenses for the 90 days while transition.  We have several licenses listed in the Citrix portal. My issue is around the Citrix License portal.  It would be nice to consolidate as well as re-allocated to the new license server.   I opened a ticket with Citrix but have Crickets, guessing this is not priority in the scheme of things.  I am trying to define my process so I can actually move forward.  My temp license on the new farm is expired so I can't move forward.

So, In the Citrix article, https://docs.citrix.com/en-us/licensing/current-release/admin-no-console/manage-licenses-myaccount.html#modify-licenses, I do see this in the article, (Below) but I do not have the modify option.

Modify licenses
Modifying a license returns a single license file and allows for allocation to another server.

  • Select a product and click the link to view the product license details.
  • Select the allocated license to modify.
  • From the Select an action menu, choose Modify allocations.
  • Type a new server name.
  • Select Modify license file.

So then I was thinking maybe I could just reallocate a few of the licenses, say one that is a 5 of 5 and place on the new server for testing.  However; it gives me an error saying this has already been fully allocated.  And I don't see a reallocate option that used to exist in the legacy portal.

So, How do I accomplish what I need to?  Either reallocate some or all licenses to the new server?  Is there a possibility to consolidate to one file?

Thanks in advance.

Citrix Licensing is currently at an 8 day turn around for support and license requests.

Awe, thanks,,, that explains the delay on my ticket.  I do think I can do this myself... well, maybe... but not seeing the options or how to, so was thinking perhaps someone might be able to provide some assistance.

To get your XA65 license file to work on an updated version of the Citrix license server, you will have to Return and Reallocate your licenses. This does NOT invalidate your current XA65 license file. You can put the new XA65 license file and your 7.15 license file on the same license server. Just point your XA65 Farm to the new license server and you should be good to go. I have done this numerous times for customers with zero issues.

Perfect, that's what I'm looking to do as I need to keep prod (XenApp 6.5) running in this transition.  I just hadn't done a return/reallocate as I believe it used to be just reallocate.

Just to clarify, when you say the new XenApp 6.5 file and 7.5 file on the new license server, you meant the new file generated from doing the return/reallocate?

Just confirming.

The old Reallocate licenses is now called Return allocations.

Thanks, I was able to return and allocate some licenses started with a 5 pack of Advanced.  Started small to make sure this would work.

Changed the License Edition to Advanced in Citrix Studio, still shows (30-day trial).  It does show the 5 licenses and shows the expiration date of 2021.0.101 so should be valid.  On the license server I see the same within the file and within the License Console.

However; I am getting 'Access denied' on my published apps now.  These were fully functional until the Temp license expired.

What could the disconnect be?

Thanks in advance.

Should note in Director my attempts indicate an issue with the licensing.

Issue
The licensing request failed.
Possible causes: •Insufficient number of licenses, or
•the license server has been down for more than 30 days.

Recommended Actions
- Verify that the license server is online and reachable.Resolve any network connectivity issues to the license server and/or reboot the license server if it appears to be malfunctioning.
- Verify that there are sufficient licenses in the environment and allocate more if necessary.

If you go onto the license server console directly, do you see any errors?

Author

Commented:
I'm not seeing any errors, I do see that the first license I tried to re-allocate is set to premium when actually I need Advanced, so grabbed those on my second attempt.  Is that causing the issue?  I'd think since in Studio the license Edition is set to Advanced, it would ignore the premium.. but maybe that's the issue?

Sorry ... my forte is NetScaler/StoreFront ... I'm not a maven in licensing.
Maybe Webster or one of the other Citrix members would be able to answer that.

The license types/editions must match. Are you licensed for Premium or Advanced?

Author

Commented:
Carl,  I looked at our existing prod server (XenApp 6.5) and we are using Citrix Virtual Apps Advanced/Concurrent.  So I applied Advanced as noted before and changed the License Edition to Advanced within Citrix Studio.

Is that Premium license throwing it off?

Ok, I removed it.  So now in License Server I only see the normal startup and the Advanced License.  This is reflected in Studio, but still fails and in director still giving license error.  Does it have anything to do with the top in Studio there that says Trial license expired?

Looking further maybe the License server isn't purging the old licenses properly.  Poking around If i go into Vendor Daemon Configuration, it is still listing all the licenses - that I already removed from the back-end directory.  I am unable to update the Number of Restart Attempts if services fails on startup as it is looking for an old license.  So maybe I just haven't cleaned this up properly.  Not sure what the Studio License portion is looking at for it's info.

Either restart the license server or restart the Citrix Licensing service to reread the license files.

Hmm... I decided to reboot the server, same issue in the Vendor Daemon and no change within Studio.  Apps still getting the license error.

The license server you installed the reallocated license file on is running the license server version from the 7.15 ISO?

Author

Commented:
Honestly don't recall if I just downloaded via Citrix portal or grabed the CTX_Licensing installer off the iso.  Running 11.15.0.0_Build_2700.  I didn't go higher as I know XenApp 6.5 isn't supported past this version.  Once transitioned off of XenApp 6.5 completely I plan to upgrade LIcense server.

Author

Commented:
Carl, is there a difference between what you can download via the Citrix portal vs the ISO?  I typically just grab the License Server from the portal, but the other components for 7.15 are from the ISO.  My thinking is that the License server is kind of a separate entity.

Any other thoughts on why this is failing?

Thanks

From citrix.com, the license server should always be the latest release.

I just installed CVAD 2003 in my lab and the license server version is 11.16.3.0 build 30000.

CVAD 1912 LTSR is license server version 11.16.3.0 build 29000.

7.15 CU5 is license server version 11.16.3.0 build 28000.

BTW, a XenApp 5.x/6.x reallocated license file WILL work with the latest license server version.

https://docs.citrix.com/en-us/licensing/current-release/frequently-asked-questions.html

If I upgrade my License Server does it affect my license files?
No. The License Server and all product licenses are fully backward compatible and do not introduce any issues into your environment.

Author

Commented:
Thanks, in reading thought I had to be no higher than 11.15.0.0 build 27000 so my existing XenApp 6.5 servers can be pointed to the new License server as well as the new XenApp 7.15.5000 environment.

Thanks, I'll upgrade my license server today as I await my call from Citrix to see if this solves the issue.

Author

As I'm doing a little looking see this in regards to that version, The License Server version 11.16.3.0 build 28000 does not support concurrent licensing when using XenApp 6.5 or earlier. Use the Citrix License Server 11.16.3 build 29000.  So going to look at 11.6.3 build 29000

Author

Commented:
Ok, this is odd, but think the real issue here is the way the License module within the Citrix Studio works.  While I was downloading the updated release 11.16.3.0 Build 29000 of License server, I took another look at Citrix Studio.  I did nothing but change the Product Edition which was set to XenApp edition = Advanced to XenDesktop Edition = APP.  I left concurrent licensing selected.  I was then able to launch a published app without the error and the Trial License expired message had disappeared within citrix Studio.

I flipped back to what I had and the Trial period has expired message re-appeared and got Access denied on the published apps which through in Director Licensing error.  So I switched back again and now I have this set to APP.  I don't know why as I'm not actually using XenDesktop but this fixed the issue.  What the heck????  This almost seems like a bug, or..

I do have this working on the same license version 11.15.0.0 build 27000 but will try updating after I point a XenApp 6.5 machine to the license server to ensure that is working properly.

I believe this will require a look inside your license file.

Here is a portion of mine:

INCREMENT XDT_PLT_UD CITRIX

Even though I am using XenApp (i.e. Citrix Virtual Apps), I am licensed for XenDesktop (Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops).

I wonder what your license file shows?

Author

Commented:
Hmm... Shows Virtual Apps Advanced.

Then I would leave your licensing options the way you found they work and leave it at that.

I was able to get in touch with Citrix Support today.  I understand now.  Apparently there is a bug in this version so I have to select 'Enterprise'.  Once I upgrade to 1912 or higher I need to switch to Advanced within the Citrix Studio Settings.

Thanks in advance for all your help, was a bit bumpy, but got there eventually.
