shared PST files keep getting corrupted

Hello, we have a few users who regularly connect to shared PST files.  Over the last few weeks they have reported that some of the PST's are becoming corrupt and they can't open them.  The PST's are located on a shared drive and they all have .corrupt at the end of the file name (e.g. "sharedpst.pst.corrupt").  I have tried restoring the PST files from backup and using the scanpst tool but the files just become corrupted again after a few days.  Also scan pst appears to fix the file, but when i re-run it the tool still reports corruptions.

PST files shouldn't be shared and shouldn't be run off the network. Both are against Microsoft best practices and will lead to what is happening to you.

Best practice is to use a shared mailbox on the server.
Microsoft doesn't support PSTs on network drives for exactly that reason.

In the past, it seems to work well for most users, but if you're experiencing network issues (or your user is doing something silly like trying to work with them over a VPN, then I would FULLY EXPECT this kind of behavour.  Even so, you shouldn't be using PSTs on network drives, especially if the information stored in them is important!

even tho shared use of a .pst is not recommended, if this did not happen before and it just has started happening recently, I would check each workstation for different versions of outlook, or corrupt (bad) memory modules or defective harddrives.

Thanks all for your comments.  The PST's are historic information that individuals in the a particular team refer to from time to time, I believe these PST's are saved from more than one mailbox.

@ Arana

We use the same version of Outlook across all PC's, but I'll check if any of the users are Mac users as the version may be different there.  Unfortunately with the COVID situation we don't have direct access to the PC's.

Does anyone have any other troubleshooting/PST repair  toosl or suggestions?  Thanks.
