getting a constant eject error flashing in the taskbar

USB hubs can be problematic though they certainly should not be.  The standard diagnostic for hubs is to disconnect the hub, then attach the USB device or devices directly to the system.  If the problem goes away, then the issue is in the hub.

When a problem has been determined to be in a hub, throw the hub away.  If it gives trouble once with device A, it will do it again with device B, C, etc.
you can check if there are no loose connections, or bents in the cables; verify by flexing the cables gently, and wiggling a bit the connctor in the slot
eventually - test the hub on another PC to be sure the problem comes from the hub
