Not sure why you had a domain in the first place. &nbsp;Training and testing is fine... but how many users? &nbsp;How many workstations? &nbsp;Domains are useful for MANAGING networks... not sure why you'd set one up if that's not your goal - EXCEPT if you want to learn. &nbsp;

One reason you *might* not want to install a client OS on a server is it is not supported by the manufacturer ... they were designed to run Server OS's, and while W10 will probably work fine anyway, you may find some of the driver packages (if needed) and/or utilities will not run/work on client OS's. Whether learning (domain, servers, etc.) or playing (using the server not as intended, enthusiast, etc.) is probably the same, in that there probably is no logical reason to do it, but there may be other/intrinsic value in doing so.

The question should really be, does he need a server. &nbsp;Sounds more like having a w10 Pro box with file sharing might suffice. &nbsp;Or a NAS box if more than 10 users. &nbsp;If you already ordered the server, you will need to install Server OS.

If I'm understanding the responses so far, you all think I should not be mixing hardware and OSs, that Server OS should run on server hardware and client OS should be on client hardware. My previous experience was that some of the applications I have tried to install have presented problems being installed on a server. That is the only reason I was considering a client OS. If my understanding of your responses is correct, I will keep the server OS on the new server machine.<br />

As for my use of the a server setup, it was strictly for learning AD. There were a half dozen users, a couple of printers, and about five client machines. As OSs have evolved from NT to 2003 to 2012 and beyond. I found the need for centralized discovery and access and control has diminished.

I've set up small offices with a Windows 10 Pro box as the server and it has worked well for them. &nbsp;There are many benefits that are given up with that approach, but they often aren't an issue in small offices.<br />

I wouldn't hesitate to try installing Windows 10 on &nbsp;server hardware. &nbsp;As suggested above, there may be driver issues, but would still give it a try and see where you get. &nbsp;Some of the driver issues may not matter.<br />

Another option is to install the Server 2012 R2 software on your new server (assuming your license is appropriate and the hardware works with it) and use it just as a host for a Windows 10 VM. &nbsp;That should get you past any driver issues. &nbsp;I'd have less concern about lack of support for 2012 r2 (I believe that's 3 years out) when it is just used as a host.

Windows 10 vs windows 2016-19?

Servers are computing devices that are similar to desktop computers in that they have the same basic components, but are significantly different in size, configuration and purpose. Servers are usually accessed over a network, and many run unattended, without a computer monitor, input device, audio hardware or USB interfaces.
