A quick goofle search turns up numerous sites claiming that this can be done.

Don't expect this to be fast, however; pen drives are not quick as far as writes are concerned, and if the system swaps at all it will wear out the pen drive quickly.  Cell write lifetimes have fallen drastically - they used to be 100,000 to a million writes per cell, and have now falled to a few hundred writes per cell.  If this drive will be used on an ongoing basis, a better choice would be a portable SSD drive with DRAM write caching.

Searching for - install ubuntu on usb stick - returns nearly 6,000,000 results.

https://ubuntu.com/tutorials provides solid instructions.

When you boot from USB, all changes you make to your mounted filesystem files (by default your USB stick) will all be persistent.

So long as you can write to the USB stick.

Nothing special about USB media. Works just the same as disk media, just slower.

Is an SSD attached to a USB SS port faster than a USB 3 stick attached to an SS USB port?
