My external monitor cable is DVI to hdmi to the computer.  The monitor wont come up though.  When I plug the DVI into the computer it works.  The computer dvi is already taken by another monitor

We need more information.

Are you trying to bring up a two-monitor configuration?

If so, do you have a display card that is capable of handling two monitors?

Or are you attempting something else entirely?

The more information you can give us, the better we will be able to answer your question.

What video card are you using, and is it capable of handling two monitors simulataneously?

Not all DVI is equal.  There is DVI analog and DVI digital, both of which look nearly identical.  A DVI to HDMI adapter works only on a DVI digital output port.

Does Windows recognize the card as dual port video, and show you the dual-monitor setup screen when you go to Display Properties?  The dual monitor setup screen will show regardless of whether there are two monitors connected.

Most boards with VGA and any other connector are single output only.

What is the board manufacturer and model?

Give details of the video display card of your computer.

This won't work.  When a video card is installed, the built-in video adapter is disabled by the BIOS at boot-up time.  For dual-monitor output a dual-output video card is needed.  If you're on a budget, I suggest something like the Radeon 6450 or Radeon 7000 series which are available for under $10.
