First get HTTPS running on the site.  Google no longer likes plain HTTP sites and ranks them lower than sites which support Secure HTTP.  This is a must.  You can submit a plain HTTP site but the results will be very poorly ranked (remember, nobody looks at more than four pages of results), and sometimes not at all.  I can attest to this having recently brought up HTTPS on my own site.

Next generate a robots.txt file that sets the desired policy for the robots you are willing to let into the site, and declares which areas of the site should not be searched by robots.

Next run a site consistency checking / link checking tool on the site to be sure that there are no dead links or other problems that would impede googlebot from doing a search of the entire site.  Do not attempt to submit the site until all links are confirmed to be working.

Next generate a sitemap.xml file in Google format.  Be sure the sitemap references the URLs using Secure HTTP, i.e., all URLs should begin with "https://" and not "http://"  Put the sitemap.xml file somewhere on your site so that it can be accessed by Googlebot but not in the root as some undesirable bots will attempt to find it and scrape it to get into areas prohibited by robots.txt.

Finally submit the sitemap.xml file to Google using the "html ping" method.  This avoids having to register with Google as the web site manager.

For anything more detailed than this, you will probably need to register with Google as a web site manager.
There is no one easy thing to do and it depends on your industry and if you are local, national or global.

If you are a local business, make sure you claim your listing in Google MyBusiness https://business.google.com/.  This is the quickest route to be seen.  This is for the "local" results that show up typically after the first set of paid results and before the organic results.  Make sure to fill in all of the information and get verified by phone or post card. Bing has a similar service at https://www.bingplaces.com/. Do both.

You will see options in Google MyBusiness to post short blurbs.  Try and post something each week and make sure it also relates to content on your site.

Part of local is making sure your listing is also showing up on other (Legit) listing sites.   Check out:
https://moz.com/products/local
https://www.brightlocal.com/
https://www.yext.com/

These three appear to do something similar but they work differently. What happens is these and other similar companies update each other and it looks something like this

Yext is the larger of all of these. Any updates you do through yext will get done quickly. The downside is as soon as you stop paying yext, your listings go away. My own editorial on this is stay away. This is SEO practices of the 90's.   Brightlocal on the other hand takes a while and they do this by hand. I have used this service myself. If you run the trial, you will see what needs to be updated and most of the listings you can do on your own. There are some that are aggrigators and you need to go through a third party.

Getting these listings is one of many things you need to do.

On your site:
  • Make sure you have well written content.
  • Post new content at least once per month.
  • Make sure the content you supply is not only about your business but is informative to the point people will be compelled to share it.
  • Make sure your content links to other pages within your site as well as respected sources outside of your site.

The most overlooked piece of the puzzle in my opinion is PR - a Public Relations campaign.  Get noticed, supply news worthy (read not advertorial) information to local media and media related to your line of business.  This also includes a healthy social campaign that can include Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and the like. Don't post content just to post. If you are going after teens & twenty somethings, no need to go to LinkedIn.  Understand what each offers and the proper way to participate.

Use tools like Google Trends or third party services like Semrush https://www.semrush.com/ to analyze your traffic and potential. Focus first on topics that have decent potential and low competition.  The high potential, high competition items are going to be more popular and what you would expect but they will be tough to break into.

It does take time so have patience and watch  your analytics each week.
