Error when upgrading from Win2012 to Win 2019 - Your files, apps, and settings can't be kept because you're installing an edition of Windows that's different than the one you're currently using."

Hi

We have a Windows 2012R2 Datacenter server ( Vmware Virtual Machine) and there are few applications installed on this server.

I copied Windows 2019 ISO on this server desktop and right clicked and mounted .

Now i clicked the setup up file and tried to upgrade from Windows 2012 to 2019 and please see the snapshot of the error .

At the bottom of the page it says "Your files, apps, and settings can't be kept because you're installing an edition of Windows that's different than the one you're currently using."

By default it has chosen "Nothing" and it is not allowing me to choose "Keep personal files  and apps"

Do i need to install windows 2019 and reinstall the application or is there any way i can upgrade to Windows 2019?

Thanks

First, Hello There is correct - I strongly advise against upgrades.  Clean installs only - upgrades can never be as reliable as a clean install with clean drivers, registry, and overall system.

Second, the issue you're having is almost certainly because you're trying to "upgrade" using 2019 Standard when you're currently using 2012 Data Center.  You cannot upgrade to a lesser edition.  You'd have to upgrade to 2019 Data Center.
