You describe the problem as "not being able to access files". &nbsp;Does that mean they can get to the share and see the files but not open them, or that they can't access the share at all?<br><br>Do all the users experience the problem at the same time, or do some of them experience the problem while some do not? &nbsp;Is it always the same users having the problem?<br><br><br>

They can get to the share. &nbsp;This affects individual files - although, no one has tried to look at others in the same folder, etc.<br />

So in that example, sometimes the user would have modify permissions, and sometimes they would not? &nbsp;If they came back later, might they be able to modify the file? &nbsp; Or is it that everyone had modify yesterday, but no one has it today?<br><br>Also, what are the odds the problem files had recently been moved (maybe replaced?) into that share?

That's why I emphasized MOVED and COPIED. &nbsp;<br />
But, since I'm not the one doing this, I can't vouch for what they see and what they do. &nbsp;But they have been informed.<br />

The reason I can't fully vouch for what they see and what they do is this:<br />
<br />
They are often working over a client-to-site VPN and either create files while in this state or copy files from elsewhere while in this state.<br />
Then they &quot;save&quot; files onto the server.<br />
Or, perhaps, they copy files from the server and modify them - then try to save the result, replacing what had been there on the server.<br />
<br />
This particular VPN gives them an IP address that's what I might call &quot;interim&quot;. &nbsp;So, they appear on the office network with those IP addresses.<br />
Then, the Windows firewall on the fileserver workstation allows that subnet for File and Printer sharing.<br />
And, their logon is duplicated on the fileserver workstation so they have privileges.

Without reliable information on the problem it will be almost impossible to troubleshoot. &nbsp;It should be straightforward to check the permissions/ownership of a file and/or set up file system auditing so one could determine the provenance of a file. &nbsp;Either (or both) might go a long way toward troubleshooting this problem.

As I look at this, I find myself asking questions like:<br />
Relative to COPY and MOVE:<br />
I presume that PASTE follows COPY but what about CUT? &nbsp;The latter seems like a MOVE.<br />
And, what about SAVE or SAVE AS? &nbsp;Are there any situations where this might be like a MOVE?

Well, the &quot;problem&quot; isn't reliable so getting reliable information on it might be tricky. &nbsp;But, yes, I agree with what you've suggested and have been doing that. &nbsp; &nbsp;I found one file that was at issue that didn't have Security for Everyone. &nbsp;That is, Everyone wasn't even in the ACL. &nbsp;The question is: how could that be?<br />

I'm going to have a serious conversation with the users. &nbsp;Fortunately, it's a small group.<br />
Makes me wonder: what if it wasn't a small group?

I believe I've found the problem even though I don't understand all the technical details of &quot;why?&quot;:<br />

Of course, it's often the most senior person in the firm:<br />
<br />
The Server folders embed Dropbox within them. &nbsp;And, somewhere within that file structure are the firm's work files shared folder - accessible on the office network and via their client-to-site VPNs..<br />
Everyone accesses this fileshare through normal Windows sharing means.<br />
Except, the senior person who, when out of the office, accesses files through Dropbox instead of the file server via the VPN.<br />
The Dropbox account that he accesses must be the same as the one used on the Server.<br />
He's the only one with this problem it seems.<br />
So, I suggested that he use the conventional method.<br />
