What should we be learning for Desktop Development in 2020 and going forwards. Learn to get paid. REAL question
Hi Everyone,
I have been asked "what is the best language to learn for desktop dev in 2020?"
Asking as a group I work with are looking to dive deeper into development. I dabble and develop in several languages on a "as and when needed" basis. Much better dev's than me and I am sometimes prescribed by the client what I must work in.
So.....
Previous skillset amongst the group (proficient, intermediate and foundation):
MS Access
MS SQL
Visual Basic Applications
Word
Excel
Windows Forms (Visual Basic)
PHP
HTML
JavaScript
MySQL
They want to use Visual Studio as the environment.
There is a project to develop so would like to steer them well.
C++, C# etc...?!?
What is the opinion on where the efforts should go for their next year?
Goal: SME and Enterprise level development solutions. It will be there go to desktop development choice (Could be multi platform - however, Windows is the target at present.. later to look at mobile etc..).
This is a "where to spend my time" for commercial gain question.
Please advise with a couple of point as to why. I can then build some information around it for them.

One approach might be to change to WPF Visual Basic as VB is familiar to most of the group? But did not want to 'box in' the comments.

For this group they want to focus on technologies that will be round for a while and companies will turn to for line of business software etc....
So it is a view to learning to earn. Yes they might not be ready commercially for 24 months, less or even more.
They are keen and want to pick something up which has a commercial future for them as well as allows them to really dive into desktop software development.
