Whatsapps send ‘unavailable’ message when calling that user

I call a friend in whatapps i get a “unavailable” message every time.  I can never connect.  She has an iPhone as I do.  And when I tested with her calling she is not on any call and same problem.  Everyone else I call in whatapps is ok.    Yet she can call me thru whatapps.

How can I fix this?

It is a tough question.

All of her friends cannot call her via WhatsApp?

Can you have physical access of her phone to do troubleshooting as the problem is not originated from your side?

To answer your question, yes, I can call her tel number in a non-whatsapp call via Phone app.

To answer your question on "All of her friends cannot call her via WhatsApp?", yes.  Seems my WhatApps call is the only one that does this.

Yet, I can call her direct mobile, also use Viber works fine and facetime; she has iPhone also.

What can this be?
How about WhatsApp video call?

I cannot make no whatapps audio or video call to her phone.

All of her friends cannot call her vis WhatsApp?

Is her iPhone connected to a corporate WiFi network?

I am sorry, when I said ' "All of her friends cannot call her via WhatsApp?", yes.  Seems my WhatApps call is the only one that does this.  ', I meant I was answering your question on your entry here.

To clear it, the only person that seems to have the problem is me.  All other can call her using WhatsApp's.

As to your question on her iPhone connected to a corporate WiFi network, no.  It's her home modem.
Last questions.

Are you and your friend located in the same country as per your mobile numbers?

Are you connecting your iPhone to a VPN while you are making the voice/video calls?
Avatar of jana

ASKER

Sure... No on both questions.
Which countries for you and her?
Avatar of jana

Good question. Prior placing the question I was thinking if country had to do with it, bit no.  I'm traveling between Central America, Caribbean and US every month and she is always in US.

I do want to say that this happens just recently, never had this problem.
Some countries allow you to send msg in WhatsApp but ban you to make audio/video calls via WhatsApp.

... it was working for 2 years since I have been traveling.
Are you using roaming or a local SIM card?

Do you have the same problem when you are in US?

Thanx for help, I think this may be boring u.

I use both roaming and a local SIM card.
I use both roaming and a local SIM card.

When you are travelling and use WiFi to make a voice/video call via WhatsApp, will you have the same problem?

The mobile operators of your SIM cards may be blocking the ports used by voice/video call of WhatsApp when you are travelling.

Never had this problem until recently.   Afterward, I haven't travel, so cannot answer this one.

You do not have the same problem when you are in US now?

Couldn't fly back to the US; stuck in Central America (but when I when I was, had no problem with WhatsApp's with this user either in US or outside US until recently)
Central America - Which country?

Same problem if your iPhone is connected to a WiFi network?

Hi,

Just tried it and it works, I can call my assoc via whatapps; no more message.

Just finish discussing this with her and no changes ... this sounds so strange.

What has happened? any ideas?
What has happened? any ideas?

It is a typical network outrage and the video traffic just stopped as the network latency is too high.

https://data-economy.com/outages-traffic-peaks-and-video-quality-the-internet-during-lockdown/

When you call someone via WhatsApp video call, it is upload network traffic from your mobile device.

When someone calls you via WhatsApp video call, it is download network traffic to your mobile device.

It is common for most ISPs or cellular service providers that your download traffic is much much better than your upload traffic in term of speed and latency.

Very strange and thanx for asking, but it just happened again.  When it did, I tested with other contacts locally, in the US, Caribbean, Japan and no problem; it seem that is this specific user.

I have no idea.

Actually I haven't tested a person on the same network where she is... I'm going to that (I know the problem is not with me)

Well couldn’t test with someone else in her office that has whatapps (waiting ‘till another staff there installs it), but something curious did happen:  i can call and talk via video in whatapps.

Now that’s crazy’s.

So everything said in this thread falls apart because I can call but only successful via video, not audio-only.

(this question has been long and greatly appreciate u guys patient)

Hi,

As per my entry some days back, I finally tested a WhatsApp's user within the same network and effectively works.

So that means that the problem is in the said user phone.

So in summary of all tested:
  • Me and my friend has iPhone
  • I can call her directly using mobile (phone apps) and she can call me
  • I cannot call her audio using WhatsApp's (gives "unavailable" message)
  • She can call me using WhatsApp with no problem (it's me to her the problem or she receiving my call via WhatsApp's is the problem)
  • I can video via WhatsApp's with her with no problem
  • All her contacts can call her using WhatsApp's no problem
  • I called someone in her location office that uses WhatsApp and works, so it's not her network; yet me calling her no  good

Hope this helps the EE reading up on this question.

(will keep testing/checking for solution)
Hi,

I"ve had a good read through and it sounds like they've accidently blocked you (in WhatsApp).  What they need to do is go into WhatsApp, click on a conversation with you, tap the three dots (top right), tap "More", tap "Unblock" (on my android anyway)
On iPhone get them to follow the directions: https://faq.whatsapp.com/en/iphone/20950271.. about half way down the page is about unblocking.

I answered that question in this entry.

If she blocked me, can I text her and she sees me?
If she blocked me, can I text her and she sees me?
Yes, quite possibly. Worth ruling it out
Avatar of jana

ASKER

So strange.  She receives calls from others no problem, it's me.

Basing on "block" what other thing can make her apps block me?
Nothing comes to mind. Given its only WhatsApp and only you... We have to assume she's blocked you by accident from within the WhatsApp app
Avatar of jana

ASKER

... if that's the case, what else can I do to  check in her device?
If she blocks you, you will not able to send her messages within WhatsApp.
Avatar of jana

ASKER

Yes, I was blocked!  Just went over with her and she still said no.  Then I call her assistance and check her phone and it was blocked all the time.  I just calling her with no problem.

Thanx Guys!
