Hi Experts,

I have worked with SQL server and understand SQL for scripting including stores procs and view.
I have never done indexing and query optimisation.
Also I would like to quickly understand SSIS that I have used in the past. Almost ten years ago :).

Can you please suggest best and fast track books for both.

Thanks

Fork over the $100-$400 to take any of the Brent Ozar's Query and index tuning classes.  Fastest way to get from zero experience to working knowledge. *

Also check out my article SQL Server Training, which is four years old but still pretty relevant.

Good luck.
Jim

* Disclaimer:  I attended these classes and the one-day performance tuning pre-con at last year's SQL Saturday-Dallas, so I have a hammer and this looks like a nail.

Thanks Jim
I want to put a certification on my CV
I know Sql enough to grasp most about it
Can you please point me at sql query and optimisation exam
I think the above course will help with it
But at this stage  it will be best for me to know exact material ( book, web, course) to get this certification done

Only if it’s possible for you :)

Many thanks

How much SQL Server experience do you have?  In my experience the starting point of certifications is years of experience, as they are not easily passable by just taking a course.  Recommend focusing on an individual exam that aligns with your experience and not a full certification, and work from there.

The 70-761 exam would be the one most aligned to this experience.   Keep in mind that Microsoft just issued 'Certpocolypse' where they are retiring ALL of their SQL Server exams in favor of new exams that are Azure heavy.  Either way, an exam pass is an exam pass and it's still an excellent resume line.

Before going down this road recommend reading this question, as the future of SSIS and other ETL tools were discussed by multiple experts and the consensus is that with Azure/AWS custom data ETL tools, the demand for ETL skillsets such as SSIS will go down, meaning there are better areas for developers to focus their learning time on.

Books by Itzik Ben-Gan.  Any book of his will be great and teach you a lot.

Get one or more the SQL Server Internals and/or Professional Admin guides.

This will not happen that "quickly" and "fast track", though, as gaining this much knowledge of subject as broad as SQL Server will take time.

FWIW, I personally put no value on a cert on a resume, esp. older certs.  Too many people take cram courses and/or use stolen qs just to get a cert, and often they have no clue of common situations, since the certs tend to concentrate on whatever area MS seems to be obsessed with when they created that particular cert.
