Hi experts,

This is probably a unexpected question for you.
But I think you can give me good opinion hence asking
I have over ten years of Excel/ VBA application development and solid SQL script development experience. I have also done some C# development all in trading firm.
I also have 2 years of web development experience and some experience using SSIS packages but that’s almost 9 years ago.

Problem is that I am out of job almost 5 months.
So I started studying C# and also aiming improve SQL in terms of indexing and query optimisation.
I also think I should go over SSIS again.

My recent role was Excel/ VBA and sql development.

Can you please advice me what would be best and quickest route to get a job.

Regards,
Sameer.

If you do not want to leave it behind, there is a low code development platform gaining tremendous momentum i.e. Power Platform - https://powerplatform.microsoft.com/en-us/

It has four major pillars today
1. Power Apps - Low Code App Development
2. Power Automate - Low code Integration Framework
3. Power BI - Powerful Business Intelligence Platform
4. Power Virtual Agents - Easy to use Bot development platform

If you want to capitalize on your VBA / C# background, this can be one of the game changer.

In current situation it is extremely difficult to get a job basis VBA/Excel and SQL.

Even the akser has realized the same, and has actively engaged in the conversation with both responders.

And while I am open to constructive criticism, just putting in a question : Has any body attempted to attend to the asker's question? is not considered constructive criticism especially when you yourself did not provide any help to the asker.

The courses provided in various comments provide an upgrade path to the to the asker's current skill set and will help him to become eligible in today's demanding job market.

I cannot give you specific career advice for your background, but I can give you some job hunting advice.

The first is to consider a job hunting activity called Informational Interviews that will help you discover what jobs are a good fit for you and may also help you land a job at the same time. The idea behind informational interviews is to talk with people who already have jobs that you think might suit you, so you can ask them questions about their job like the expected qualifications and the job's rewards and challenges. While you are not expecting a lead for a specific job opening during an informational interview, it is expected that you will ask about the general availability of jobs in the market, and sometimes this will turn up a specific opportunity. You will also ask for suggestions of other professionals that you might interview so you can consider their profession for your career. All the while, in addition to gaining market insight, you will be improving your interview skills which will ultimately help you land the job you eventually apply for. By the way, one of my own long-term consulting jobs was the result of an informational interview I had conducted a year before.

You can Google informational interviews to read articles that explain how they are done, starting from identifying prospective people to interview, to preparing for the interview (information about you and your questions), conducting the interview, and following up on the interview. Here is one of the articles near the top of the list from the Harvard Business Review titled "How to Get the Most Out of an Informational Interview":
https://hbr.org/2016/02/how-to-get-the-most-out-of-an-informational-interview

My second advice is that you don't have to find a job on your own. Keep in mind that recruiters / head hunters work for the companies looking to hire people, so they are not necessarily the best resource to help you find a job. A recruiter's main purpose is to encourage qualified applicants to apply for the job, and then winnow down the list to the best few for presentation to their client (the employer). On the other hand, an outplacement service works on your behalf by mentoring you to find and land a job. They can cost several thousand dollars, but if they help you find the right job a few months faster than without their help you will quickly make back your investment. A good outplacement company will provide tests and coaching to help you determine what jobs suit you, give personal feedback on your cover letter, resume and interviewing skills with mock interviews, and have resources to generate job leads. I have used Right Everywhere https://www.righteverywhere.com/ which is an on-line service, but I expect that this is one of many fine outplacement services. I also used another company that took a more hands-on approach where they literally provided me with weekly packages of 20 printed, addressed cover letters and resumes which I then mailed out. This paced the job hunt so every week I mailed out 20 letters to generate leads, followed up on the leads I sent out the week before to schedule interviews, and attending interviews scheduled the week before. They even offered a cubical with a phone and access to a computer, printer, secretary, etc. so that a candidate could work without distractions they might encounter at home. The expectation was to attend 3 interviews a week, and by the laws of numbers get a job within a couple of months.

You are already following my final advice. Experts Exchange has thousands of experts who are potential candidates for informational interviews, if only by phone, and job leads. I believe you can post your candidacy in the appropriate subject areas, and also see job offer posts.
