I have a red x mark , next to the speaker icon on a Dell Latitude 3540 laptop - windows 10 .

I followed the following instruction below  but no joy. Is there anything else i  can do to resolve this issue.

On the same laptop go to this Dell link and scroll down to download file
ref link:  https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=gft2d

Save the file somewhere on your laptop and then run it when the download is complete

you didn't perchance hit the hotkey combination to disable audio did you? Fn + Mute Activates Mute

Hello There

Have you rebooted? Can you update drivers?

You can try:
Settings -> System -> Sound -> make sure that the correct output device is selected
Settings -> System -> Sound -> on the left click on Sound Control panel -> Playback tab -> Properties -> Device usage -> make sure it's enabled
Settings -> System -> Sound -> scroll down to "Advanced sound options" and click on "App volume and device preferences" -> check Master and App volume. You can also reset it to defaults.
Settings -> System -> Sound -> Troubleshoot

Even i plug in my ear phone , the speaker icon is x red.
Hello There

What about other suggestions? Have you run a troubleshooter? Have you rebooted?

Can you log in as a different user?

Run in CMD:
sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Windows updates have been horrible for bugs.  I'd check to see if you received any recent updates, and if so, uninstall them and see if that makes any difference.

Please open up device manager
1. Right-Click the device>Uninstall>also put a check in DELETE THE DRIVER SOFTWARE FOR THIS DEVICE
2. Reboot to see if Windows automatically reinstalls, if not install the drivers you downloaded

Tried the above solution as well  and didn't work. After re-imaging the laptop the sound is working.

Thanks
