Network Routing Protocols for Design

Last Modified: 2020-04-28
We are upgrading our overall network. We currently run static routes across all section of our network i.e. external to our ISP, across our DMZ, to our DR and also internally across our WAN. As part of the upgrade some of the options we are exploring are as follows:

1. Full BGP routing internally and externally;

2. BGP internally to the WAN, BGP to the ISP, and static between the primary site and the DR site;

I would appreciate your feedback and comments on the two options we are exploring according to the following:

1. Ease of maintanence
2. Robustness and resilience
3. Security
4. Speed

Do you have multiple internet connections?

Redundant paths on the inside of your network?

If not, I would stick with static routes.

Thank you for your comments.

We currently have acquired our own set of external IP's from our regional registry which we have started using for some our and DMZ external machines.

1. Connection to ISP:
we currently have a single path to a single ISP from our primary site and a secondary link to the ISP out of our DR. Our ISP link from our DR is currently offline as we dont have the routing capability to use this as a secondary link. Currently all our internet traffice from our DR is routed through our primary ISP link whilst the secondary sits idle.

PRIMARY ISP                                                           SECONDARY ISP
          |                                                                                    |
          |                                                                                    |
PRIMARY CORE ----->QnQ------------------<-----SECONDARY CORE

2. WAN links:
Links from our Primary core to our WAN branches are on a single link, we would like to build some resiliency into this and put in secondary links for our WAN.
