Another possibility (I've seen this at least a few times): left-click on the speaker next to the clock. &nbsp;Above the volume control is a drop-down to let you select the appropriate output. &nbsp;Note where it is set now and then try the other options.

It was bad luck that the driver update was an overnight download, so I couldn't do the driver update until after your posts.<br />

I've got an HP Desktop PC running Windows 10.<br />

Just recently the audio output no longer works from any of the sockets (on both front and back).<br />
But I hear barely audible sound coming out of the case, from an inbuilt speaker.<br />

A desktop computer is a personal computer designed for use at a single location due to its size and power requirements, usually by one person. The most common configuration has a case that houses the power supply, motherboard, disk storage (usually one or more hard disk drives and optical disc drives); a keyboard and mouse for input; and computer monitor and printer for output. The case may be oriented horizontally and placed atop a desk or vertically and placed underneath or beside a desk.
