There are two parts. <br />

<li>How you integrate the payment with your site</li>
<li>Which type of payment strategy to use</li>

By payment strategy, I am referring to the two major options you have. <br />

<ol type="1">
<li>The payment flows through your own server and you in turn use the API to hit the Gateway (that submits to the processor for the yes/no answer). &nbsp;</li>
<li>The user submits payment directly to the gateway</li>
</ol>
<br />
The first option gives you more control over the experience and you can create a smoother workflow. Coding this can be easier because you are controlling everything and able to display back information in realtime as you expect. The disadvantage is you do have to make your server PCI compliant. There will probably be others that groan about all the security and what fines you get for not doing this properly. But the fact is if you follow simple procedures you are safe. Not to get side tracked, but you get your site scanned, the scan finds issues you didn't know existed, get them patched and repeat. If you are on shared hosting, they probably already have a pci compliant system in place. &nbsp;This is for another thread though. &nbsp;<br />
<br />
Under this option the user submits the item and quantity of what they want. Your php code on the back end looks up the item price and figures out the total for the line item and grand total for everything. Display back final totals to the user where they enter in their credit card information, submit to your server that passes that directly to the gateway. If the payment is accepted, you mark the purchase paid and send out a recipient then process the order.<br />

The other option where your users submit directly to the gateway takes you out of the loop of passing credit card data through your server so there is no pci compliance issues. However, this means you have to change your workflow. For this workflow, the user can still submit to you the product and quantity, then you display the total amount to be submitted to the gateway. The user submits to the gateway and is redirected back to your site. The api will send a response to a url that you have predetermined. That url will submit to you some type of ID, the response including the amount and other information you have setup to be returned. <br />

There are multiple sub options with each of these major options. I used to run everything through my server but have started to switch to the other route. The reason is the PCI scans get to be a PITA every quarter. Your server can pass after some patching one quarter but the very next scan when nothing changes on your end, there are new things to patch up. Some do seem legit, but others I swear are just to show the scan is doing something. &nbsp;For smaller projects, going the route of submitting directly to the gateway I feel is the best choice. For larger projects were you do require more control, going through your server is a good choice.<br />

How do you integrate? the short answer is through an api. Most of which are REST API's and work similarly. Depending on who you go through, there may be an SDK for PHP to make things easy. &nbsp;Authorize.net for instance has a very easy to understand API and this is because of their documentation. Paypal also has an SDK but their documentation is confusing for most until you start using it. As I noted in that linked question, the waters are getting muddy as to the difference between a gateway and processor. In short, your code will interact through a gateway and the gateway interacts with your processor. Today, there are processors that are also gateways and fice versa. &nbsp;Paypal is a little of everything. <br />

The first place to start with is how you want the workflow of your site to go. &nbsp;Go through the motions of purchasing on amazon, godaddy and others and see how their workflow is. How they offer payment by credit card or paypal acount. Saving payment information for later (the saved credit card is actually saved on the gateway, not by you).<br />

Next, explore payment processors review their rates and gateway options. <br />

There may be other/different options in your country I am not aware of, but look over their documentation, that is a good clue as to what you are working with. &nbsp;Discount rates will seem different but in actuality they are similar. &nbsp;Going through a traditional processor like bank is like buying a used car. They have many different types of rates and how they charge. It makes it seem lower than the actual rate you pay. If you look at the options I posted, they all have a simple method for how they charge. While there may be some small savings going the used car route, you would have to have sales in the millions for that to make a significant difference.

You will give your users the option. If they choose a traditional card like visa/MC/Amx, you will hit one api and if they select Paypal, you use their api. &nbsp;If you use Paypal as your processor/gateway, this becomes more seamless. &nbsp;Go through the motions of signing up for a domain with godaddy and see how they do it where you can either enter in your CC info or paypal.

As far as costs, you get charged a discount rate that will hover around 3%+/- of the transaction. Sometimes there are also per transaction feeds of around $0.25 each as well.<br />

If you decide to go with the first option I described where everything passes through your server, you may need to spend $200 to $300 per year on quarterly scans.

Hey David, you have the gist but there are a lot more involved than just that bit of information. Every processor has their own set of rules and how they work. Paypal/Strip will be completely different than working with a bank's processor where your own personal credit may be involved. But this is beyond the scope of how to integrate.

Once you get into the 30 to 100 a week range, it makes sense to automate. &nbsp; <br><br>The first way to automate is by setting up a callback url/listener that paypal can hit each time there is a transaction. If you want to develop this in php, what I have done in the past is to create a new folder or subdomain to store the php files and libraries such as the sdk and have a page or route set up to accept a post from your own server, process the data and return it in something the old program can use. &nbsp; The old program can hit your php with xmlhtp post.<br><br>I used to use FoxPro a very long time ago before Microsoft bought it, I think I remember it was similar to VBScript. &nbsp;What you could do to make things easy for a one off is to just hit the paypal api in VFP and use xmlhttp&nbsp;<a href="http://fox.wikis.com/wc.dll?Wiki~XmlHttp" rel="ugc">http://fox.wikis.com/wc.dll?Wiki~XmlHttp</a>&nbsp; and you don't need to use chilkat. &nbsp;<br><br>Where you see examples in CURL, you can just as easily use XMLHTTP directly without having any type of component.

Just one thing I realized, by using PayPal SDK - PHP a set of classes are used to the same goals (instead of curl commands).
