Have to have a second screen to get surround sound

I have a desktop gamer PC where I have connected a Samsung home theater to get surround sound. I connect to my 1440p monitor with DisplayPort and HDMI to the home theater. The problem is that I have to have a second screen connected to the home theater (right now an older flatscreen TV). Whenever I turn off or disconnect the second screen, I lose all sound. I only need the 1440p monitor, so it seems like a waste to have the second screen turned on when I don't watch it. Any ideas?

i would start by checking the surround settings :  https://appuals.com/how-to-configure-and-test-5-1-surround-sound-on-windows-10/

ASKER

Thank you, but it seems to be more about how to fix no surround sound rather than the situation I have with no sound at all
