o365 user left for 6mos and returned, Calendar permissions are now bad

A user JDoe@company.com left and returned to the company after 6 mos.  He used to have "Free/Busy" permissions a.k.a. "availability only" on the calendars of approx 50 people.

Upon his return, he currently has "Connection Error" When attempting to view these calendars.  If I raise the permission level to "Limited Details" or "Full Details," that calendar will then work and show full detalis.  If I drop that same calendar back to "Availability Only' he receives connection error.

I'd recreate his mailbox as the ahkam's razor approach but microsoft creates these ridiculous .onmicrosoft.com account aliases that block new users being created with the same name citing "error" related to the .onmicrosoft.com alias already existing elsewhere or having existed in the past.  managing these aliases has proven very difficult in the past.

anyone have experience with either of these issues?

csg,
Do not have the user use the outlook autocomplete when trying to view the calendars.  Have him pick the calendars fresh from the Global Address list.  If the user does that and can see the free/busy information it will now overwrite the corrupt autocomplete the user has in outlook going forward.

You can also delete his autocomplete entries totally if they are failing on other users as well
In outlook
File>Options>Mail>In the center scroll down to "Send Messages" and click Empty Auto-Complete List

used MFCMAPI to backup autocomplete list and emptied it. did not work.  selecting users fresh from GAL,did not work.
csg,
Is this a hybrid configuration or you are running only o365 with Outlook on the desktop?
its a one way sync from AD to office 365.  I want to recreate the mailbox, however office 365 reserves a .Domain.Onmicrosoft.com  address that does not delete when you remove the mailbox and it will prevent you from creating one with the same name.   this is my fear and has stopped this in its tracks.  any suggestions with what to do with the .onmicrosoft.com address preventing creation of the new mailbox is welcome
this is still an issue removing the .onmicrosoft.com accounts if anyone cares to comment, thanks for your help!

I attempted to delete the alias prior mailbox recreation an 365 UI states

An Azure Active Directory call was made to keep object in sync between Azure Active Directory and Exchange Online. However, it failed. Detailed error message:   Unable to update the specified properties for on-premises mastered Directory Sync objects or objects currently undergoing migration. The issue may be transient and please retry a couple of minutes later. If issue persists, please see exception members for more information.

however, this account has been untouched on the admin side for almost a year.

If the .onmicrosoft.com address was the user's old UPN follow the below instructions

Connect to exchange online via powershell
Then type in this command
connect-msolservice  and enter your credentials if need be

Run the 2 command below to remove said address

Remove-MsolUser -UserPrincipalName user@.onmicrosoft.com  -Force
Remove-MsolUser -UserPrincipalName user@.onmicrosoft.com  -RemoveFromRecycleBin
Ingram Micro states the alias takes 30 days to delete in order to allow you to recreate the account.
this is an unacceptable time for the end user to wait.
my plan is now to create a new account and make the old a primary alias/reply.

the .onmicrosoft.com account inflexibility and fact of its involvement is deconstructive.
