Hi I have a client that bought a Brother printer MFC-L5850DW.  I took it out of the box and when I tried to login via 192.168.1.200 the default password does not work.

I tried initpass, access and a few I got off the web but nothing worked.  I also tried to reset it to factory defaults, read through the entire long and short manual's while I sat on Brothers tech support line and eventually hung up and came here.

Thanks all.

Try using "access" as the password.

Is that the correct IP address for the printer? If there is more than one printer at the site, you may be talking to a different printer. Try printing a config page:
  1. Press [] [Settings]>[All Settings]>[Print Reports]>[Network Configuration].
  2. Press [Yes].

After a factory reset, the password should be either:
  • the password located on the back or bottom of the machine preceded by "Pwd"
    OR
  • initpass
as per  https://support.brother.com/g/b/faqend.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=mfcl5850dw_us&faqid=faq00002496_002

Harjit, do you mean on the back of the printer?  do they keep the password there?

CompProbSolv, yes, that is my brother go to also besides initpass and admin.

hdhondt, I'm sure that is the correct IP, I did factory default it.  So is the Password on the bottom of the machine, like under the paper tray?

are you trying to log into the web interface for the printer by using your browser and then trying to log into the printer?  Definitely when the printer comes from the manufacturer it should not have a passsword to log into the web interface. Since you said you did a factory reset of the printer then any password present should have been erased. I have never heard of any default passwords for the web interface  located on the brother printers. I have serviced quite a few brother all in one printers (MFC).

But did you print a configuration page? A factory default does not give the printer an IP address. Yes, the password can be on the bottom. Check the manual page I gave.

as hdhondt states if you print a network configuration page, you will find the ip address of the printer as well the password will be located on that page as well.
The following information for in the bulletin: I MPORTANT – Network Security Notice: Default Login Password Change
Important Notice for the Network Security: Default Login Password Change
The default password for managing machine settings is either:
-the password located on the back of the machine and marked "pwd"
-initpass
You can also check the default password by printing the machine's Network Configuration Report.

OK so Harjit got it right, I never knew that the password was on the back.  it was on the same sticker where the serial was.  Actually too small for me to read, I had to take a pix of it.

I have set these printers up for like 20 years and was used to the norm.  Looks like they just changed it.

What was the password? "Q#WU4Th4".  Yaw I know... really?

It's like most routers: the default password is printed on the back, and complex enough to be un-guessable. And you can change it if you prefer something simpler, or don't want other users to know.
